Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

From the reading I've done and the few practicing Buddhists I know, I would gather that Buddhism leans to the right socially/politically, but online I see a lot 'hate' toward conservative points of view. Does Buddhism require you to be a liberal? Thanks According to Dharmawheel, yes. Best not to ex...

Thank you all for the advice. I'm going to sit a while, read Dogen and come back in a few weeks.

Nobody seeks confirmation bias. It just happens. That's part of why its a problem. You should thank people when its pointed out.
Your welcome.

Re: How does it work?

Prayer is the yearning of the soul toward God whereby we express our desires, longings and sufferings as well as giving thanks, praise and glory to our creator and Saviour. Prayer is an act of worship and to be done corporately as well as privately, it flows from our undivided connection with the D...

Great replies, thank you. In my area we have a meditation group but it's a mixed bag of traditions including wicca and native spirituality.

Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

And for my part, I have never understood how a republican can square their economic beliefs in unfettered free trade, their absurd climate change denialism, and their commitment to undermining education and healthcare with their supposed religious commitment to bearing love and compassion for all s...

Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

Well, I'm not a rabid righty,

This was just a topic that grew out of my reading of recent posts. It was not me seeking to confirm my bias but to see what Buddhism is all about. I appreciate your irenic responses to my questions and your patience.

On the weak mindedness of Trump supporters: “Trump supporters are highly suggestible. They believe whatever they are indoctrinated to believe.” “The problem is, as has been demonstrated time and again, that for Trump, and for Trump supporters, facts don't matter.” Hate: “Maybe they could ban his imm...

Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

I understand.

When I have more time I'll pull quotes from threads dealing with politics and post them in this thread. It's really disheartening but it should take long to get a bunch. Give me a few days.

Thanks.

Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

Shouldn't we be compassionate to those who hold different political views instead of calling them names, attacking and maligning their character? I've seen the name calling on this forum and the assumption that one who holds to a different political position is an a-hole. Is it more of an internet p...

Re: Dharma Transmission

Let me rephrase the question since the default answer on this forum is often "use the search function" or "Google it."

How did you come to the school of Buddhism you now profess and how did you find your teacher?

It does, in very general terms, require you not to be an asshole. You may conclude that certain modern political positions are incompatible with that.
That is why I asked the question. I see a lot of hate being aimed at non liberal or progressive political positions.

Sutras Alone?

I have heard it stated that in the West we tend to think like Protestants when it comes to the Sutras that we can come to the Sutras on our own and figure out the dharma without transmission from a teacher. Should one have a dharma teacher or can anyone just pick up and read and have a full grasp of...

Dharma Transmission

What is Dharma Transmission? Is it similar to the Christian idea of apostolic succession where legitimate teachers trace their heritage back to a famous teacher or even the Buddha?

Thank you
