The Essence of Buddhism by Jo Durden Smith

I've read this book a couple of times. The language is easy to follow and it gives a nice overview of key Buddhist ideas and a rough outline of how Buddhism spread across Asia and beyond. Quick question: did Jo Durden Smith practise Buddhism? Looking at his other work on Wikipedia, it seems like an ...

Re: Coarse language

I just don't understand why people are so easily offended by words. This standard formula is found in lots of places in the Pali Canon: And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, from divisive speech , from abusive speech , and from idle chatter: This is called right speech. Some folk find sw...

Coarse language

Greetings,

All too often I find myself slipping into the use of coarse language. I swear too much, habitually. If anyone has any advice on how I might be able to train myself to improve my language, I'd be very grateful to read it.

With kindness

Re: How do you put your hands when you bow to a Buddharupa?

There has to be space between the palms because one imagines a wishfullfilling jewel there. It is being offered to the Buddhas and the sentient beings. Thank you for sharing your answer. You've piqued my curiosity; are you able to provide any links to further reading about this practice? I've not e...

Looks only random to me.
I cannot remember where I saw these; but wherever it was, I recall that folk were being instructed to put their hands like this. Different sources, different instructors. I wish I could remember where.

I'm keen to hear what you do, and if there's a reason for that. Thank you!

How do you put your hands when you bow to a Buddharupa?

I asked this question on Dhammawheel, but I'm interested in the thoughts of folk here too. When bowing to a Buddharupa or a monastic, how do you place your hands together? It may seem like an odd question, but I've seen several variations and I'm curious to know if there's a reason for this. 1. IMG_...

Re: An abundance of pictures and video clips

This is interesting. I had never considered the fact that the desire to include an image to help explain some text might be driven by habits gained through the use of social media. I had never considered the idea that wanting to include a picture could be ego-driven and narcissistic. I'm guilty of w...

An 'as-standard' introduction message

Greetings all, I used to have an account here, but I have long since abandoned the username by which I used to be known. I post a bit on Dhammawheel, but I used to be far more active there too (and moreso on my old username). Before that, I was an E-Sangha denizen. I've been practising now for nearl...

The Golden Child vs Tibetan Buddhism?

I hope I have posted this question in the right place; my apologies if I haven't. I've just watched The Golden Child again. I was wondering how close to the mythology of Tibet or Tibetan Buddhism the film was. Are there aspects that the film gets right? Are there aspects that the film gets wrong? If...

I'm looking closely now for the face of the tathagata on every slice of bread I toast.

Move over 'virgin Mary' and 'Elvis', your ebay crown has been taken.
