Re: HHST Chakrasamvara qoute

Usually when the Buddha Vajradhara taught a tantra, he manifested as the deity and mandala then dissolved it. However, the Chakrasamvara tantra was taught (in part) to subdue Shiva, Uma, and their retinue at the 24 sites, so the Buddha did not dissolve the mandalas after the tantra was taught to kee...

From the Jangchup Lamrim prayer book: Homage Verse to the Perfection of Wisdom MA SAM JO ME SHE RAB PHA ROL CHHIN I bow down to the mother of the conquerors of the three times MA KYE MI GAG NAM KHÄI NGO WO NYI The Perfection of Wisdom, inexpressible by words or thoughts SO SO RANG RIG YE SHE CHO YUL...

Re: Barche Lamsel Visualization?

Thank you very much for these images! But it seems to me that these thangka images are very different from what the prayer describes. For instance, in the case of Dzam Ling Gyen Chok, the prayer states: <snip> And here, this is not quite the case. So the thangka or the prayer? Not that thangkas are...

Re: Death Ceremonies/Rituals in Geluk Lineage?

As someone familiar with Kagyu and Nyingma traditions, I am curious as to what rituals or practices Gelukpas perform for the dead. In my tradition, it's common to do "Jangchoks" for guiding the deceased, and there are many....I've participated in ones related to NamCho Amitabha, Akshobya, the 35 Bu...

Re: Why does Gelug school claim emptiness means things exist without self nature?

Its an assertion by many Gelugpas that one can become realized through the intellect. I don't think that's the Gelug position (realization through intellect or Buddhas conceptualizing). Reason only takes you so far, then you have to give it up. My understanding is that it's for people like me who n...

Re: Are the bell, dorje and damaru only for tantric use?

I have instructions from Lama Zopa to perform Tsongkhapas Guru Yoga as a life practice and in the book that I have there are places where the bell and dorje are used along with the Damaru. I am wondering if this is for practitioners with tantric empowerment or if anyone that possess the bell, dorje...

Re: Can you practice Tibetan Buddhism without ever had a Gur

I am fortunate enough to be moving to the Phoenix area in a few months and I have learned that Dharma centers abound there. There are 2 that I am particularly interested in checking out. Emaho Foundation and Phoenix Tara Mandala. If anyone knows of these centers, any personal experiences would be a...

Re: Eight Mahayana Precepts

I have a question about the Precepts (in particular in the Geluk tradition). After taking the Precepts during a ceremony with one's guru, if the disciple does not renew the Precepts every new day, can said disciple take the Precepts again on his or her own (for example on a favourable/auspicious da...

Re: Donating one's organs at death

At least in my country, the only way for your organs to be donated is if an accident leaves you brain dead. To keep the organs as fresh as possible, the body is left functioning when the organs are removed. So while the person is declared dead by certain criteria, organs other than certain parts of ...

Re: "YUNDAN TRINLEY DORJE RINPOCHE"

Back when I was in a new city and looking for a dharma centre, I came across a temple of his online and saw a couple of red flags. With teachers who are more active in the Sino-sphere, it can be a bit more difficult for English speakers to evaluate because the style and wording is a product of Chine...

Re: Requesting Empowerment

Generally, any formal request can be made along the following lines: three prostrations, request for particular teaching or practice, and an offering. While you might not be expected to cover the complete cost of hosting the empowerment, you should at least provide the money offering for the request...

Re: My grandmother died

While tantric methods can be extremely powerful for those who know how to apply them, general advice for practices to benefit the dead emphasise Medicine Buddha practice, whichever you are familiar with, and the recitation of the King of Prayers (Samantabhadra bodhisattva's aspiration and conduct).

Re: Turn daily life into Dharma

Better to be alone than in a cult or people with wrong view. The dharma really only needs to function at the level of your own mind anyway. The truth is truth, regardless of how many people believe in it. The Gandhavyuha section of the Avatamsaka Sutra provides us with a number of characters who we ...

Re: Empowerments by Dalai Lama on 14th-16th&18th-21th

In the past, HHDL has stated that a specific empowerment transmission over webcast was valid. Whether or not these empowerments will be considered valid is up to HHDL's, so I would keep an eye out for any such statements during the preliminary teachings. In the case of the Kalachakra last year for ...

It is probably much the same principle as this daily morning ceremony at one of the two head temples of Soto Zen.

It is hard to say for sure what the commitments will be, but you can make reasonable guesses. Definitely daily Six Session Guru Yoga. Almost certainly daily recitation of Yoga of Three Purifications. Quite possibly a daily Yamantaka sadhana, if not two.

I agree that there is also an inner meaning, but I had assumed the outer meaning was skillful means to entice those who would turn away from the Dharma because of it's conflict with their occupations. Another deity that confers similar benefit is Kurukulle, whose siddhi grants a kingdom, and I thin...

Re: Tibetan Buddhism only loosely connected with Buddha's teachings?

What about the claim that Tibetan Buddhism absorbed ideas from the native Bön religion? Tibetan Buddhism absorbed about as much from Bon as Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia picked up indigenous and Hindu elements such as Nat worship, amulets, astrology, etc. In East Asia, indigenous and Confuci...
