Re: closed eyes vs. opened eyes

Eyes open. I find that when I close my eyes that my monkey mind goes nuts. Eyes open is much, much better. I was taught from the start that it was eyes open as that helped us to be more "present"

knickers in a twist over nothing?

Sometimes, being a Buddhist in a predominately Christian country can bring it's own challenges... My children go to the local primary school and I have always been keen on them choosing their own path (whilst secretly hoping they will choose Buddhism). This worked well for my daughter and she took r...

Is anyone familiar with this visualisation?

Years ago I went to a meditation given by a monk from samye ling. It was a visualisation to go with the four special foundations and I remember one of them so about picturing yourself dangling off a cliff and grasping onto the grass that was there. Has anyone else heard of these and if so, can they ...

Re: Problem with Parents

Difficult - there is a famous Phillip Larkin poem about parents but I can't repeat it because the first two lines are a bit rude. Sometimes people just cant or wont be helped. I know that you said that this is having a negative impact and I feel for you I really do, but you can also use this situati...

Re: Offerings and prayers: Authentic Buddhism?

Buddhism is very simple and yet at the same time incredibly complex, depending on what mind set you are in, what your background is and how open you are to different ideas. Something that can seem a tangled mess of philosophy and general "out there" ness can seem crystal clear later (and vice versa ...

I saw this in a different thread (I think) it looks really neat. It took a while to work it out when I first saw it, I thought, do you sit IN it? Then I realised there was another photo! Lol!

" Take Ngondro. Now, as you say, Vajrayana requires a master, but it is completely possible to complete 100,000 repetitions or recitations of whatever and not cultivate a single drop of bodhicitta Absolutely, you are absolutely correct. If you undertook Ngongdro without cultivating the right motivat...

Re: Lam Rim

Getting involved with dharma is like being a snake in a bamboo tube. You can't turn round and go back, you can only go forwards :D Lots and lots of teachers say keep it simple. There is a tendency to try to do different practices and until you are doing so many that you are doing none with any effec...

sitting positions

I am entering that age when I am starting to worry about varicose veins and general circulation in my legs when sitting for long periods. Does anyone know if there is any evidence (not anecdotal) about whether not not sitting crossed legged causes circulation problems/complications? I'm kinda hoping...

Re: Caught on camera

These are so beautiful. I have a friend who is very into how the brain works (its his job to find out) and he says that the mind craves order and seeks out patterns which is why people see Elvis on their toast. He has some very funky exercises to illustrate his point. He is a pagan so I was surprise...
