Article: Nicholas Humphrey’s Beautiful Theory of Mind

An interesting article: Nicholas Humphrey’s Beautiful Theory of Mind . " In his new book, “Sentience,” a neuropsychologist argues that consciousness evolved to make us feel that life is worth living. " I was vaguely familiar with the concept of blindsight, but this article went into some a...

In the news: Dark retreat

Here is something off the beaten path: A short ESPN (sports network) article about a famous American football player, Aaron Rodgers, who went into a four day dark retreat. Re: In Madhyamaka is everything empty, without exception? Or is there something that exists?

So, which is it? Is it that there is no such thing as any thing, whatsoever, because all is empty, no exceptions? Or is the Madhyamaka teaching that all things are empty, which points to some transcendent reality? Others have given you some excellent answers to your question. Speaking for myself, t...

Re: It has been one year since Thay's passing.

Made specially for the first anniversary of the passing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, "I Have Arrived, I Am Home" is a new documentary from filmmaker Max Pugh (A Cloud Never Dies, Walk With Me). The film includes footage and commentary on Thich Nhat Hanh's return to his native Vietnam, w...

Musical tribute to Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche on his 91st b'day

I've always had a deep appreciation for Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. I have received immense benefit from his published works. I just happened to come accross this youtube video of a musical tribute to him from a month ago for his 91st birthday and thought that others who have a connection with him mi...

AutumnMoonFestival.JaneKuArtist-1.png Today, September 10th, is the 15th day of the eigth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. A full moon day. Typically celebrated in Asian cultures as the Mid-Autumn Festival. Known in the West as the Harvest Moon, altough the dates don't always line up. The Harve...

Re: Buddhism and therapy - from the helpers perspective

In doing some research on another subject, I came across this really interesting (at least for me) short interview clip by Brene' Brown on her use of the Buddhist concept of near enemies: "...I came across a concept from Buddhism that I remember reading many years ago, it didn't hit me. When I ...

Re: 8 months of no rain!

Actually, that's pretty normal, Redding is inland, about 100 miles from the coast. But it probably has increased a few degrees over the last 20 to 30 years. The best weather in California is all along the coast. There's a joke that's mostly true that the weather is perfect right on the coast and th...

Re: 8 months of no rain!

Just took a vacation to visit my old stomping grounds in Los Angeles for the last couple of weeks. Drove down. My god, the state is getting baked. For literally hundreds of miles, the temperatures were over the 100s, typically from 103-106. On Tuesday evening, driving back to Oregon, I got to my hot...

Re: The four endings

To provide just a bit more info to Kim's post, the Udānavarga has significantly more verses (1100) than the Dhammapada (423) and the Udana (80) combined. For those interested, here is a multilingual translation of the four endings, from here . 4Endings.Multilingual.png Additionally, here is a good m...

Re: The four endings

My google-fu got better. It is from the Udānavarga 1:22, Toh 326 Kangyur, sa, 209b6 . I have only ever encountered this verse in a Tibetan context, and it does not appear to be part of the Pali Cannon. I was able to find the above reference in a footnote of the quote from Gampopa's Ornament of Preci...

If it might be in the Pali Canon, I think I'll swing over to dhammawheel and see if anyone can there can help.

The four endings

My google-fu is failing me on this one. Is there a specific scriptural source for the four endings?

The end of accumulation is dispersal
The end of rising is falling
The end of meeting is parting
The end of birth is death

Re: Zen practice in nature!

Have you ever had the experience of closeness to Dharmakaya in mind which does seem as though it stems from something aware, primordial and clarity-full? I suspect there are those here who have had that experienct to varying degrees. I also suspect no one here will tell you that, since such experie...
