Re: Prayers for Dad

Brief Sukhāvatī Aspiration , slightly modified for your father... Emaho! Amitābha, magnificent Buddha of Boundless Light, With the great compassionate lord Avalokiteśvara to his right, And Vajrapāṇi-Mahāsthāmaprāpta on his left, Surrounded by an assembly of countless buddhas and bodhisattvas In the...

Re: An auspicious day at Garchen Buddhist Institute

The monk was probably Khenpo Tenzin, Garchen Institute's resident lama. He's studying English and is the go-to guy for when Rinpoche is away due to his teaching itinerary and/or personal retreat. Yes, that was the monk. He showed me around the grounds, as it was my first visit there. A gentle and l...

Upcoming book by Karl Brunnhölzl on The Aspiration Prayer of Samantabhadra

Came across this today on Amazon: A Lullaby to Awaken the Heart: The Aspiration Prayer of Samantabhadra and Its Commentaries , scheduled to come out at the end of November. Given Brunnhölzl's track record of other outstanding books, I have high hopes for this one as well. From the Amazon blurb, A ke...

An auspicious day at Garchen Buddhist Institute

Was in Los Angeles a couple of days ago and decided to drive over to see Garchen Buddhist Institute today. By sheer coincidence I was there when the full moon eclipse was happening. A monk and some of the residents assembled at that time to make a smoke offering and recite the Prayer of Kungtuzanpo ...

Re: Trungpa Cat Story Thread

What happened to it? It had some amazing examples of spiritual bypassing, as well as recognizing the importance of respecting vajra brethren. It may be back. Turned into too much of a dumpster fire to just lock and leave for public consumption, and we have limited mod time at the moment to clean it...

Ok. Lots of posts removed. Some of them may find there way into a split off topic (or not). I don't have the time to sift through them this evening so see if there is anything worth salvaging. For now, carry on with the discussion of what's the point of abusive gurus?

Re: Karma, "soulmates" etc

So, I'm curious what anyone's take, including the actual Buddhist official outlook is on "soul mates", chance encounters, predestined relationships and all that. ... Perhaps the nearest I know of to a soul mate story in Buddhism is the relationship between the Buddha and his wife, Yashodhara. Here ...

Re: Four kinds of mindfulness according to mahamudra

Hi, do you know any more elaborated teachings on four kinds of mindfulness according to mahamudra, as mentioned by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal in Moonbeams of mahamudra? I find Lobsang Lhalungpas translation a bit difficult. however he seems to differentiate: vigorous mindfulness, spontaenous mindfulness, ...

Re: Non Buddhist enlightenment

Found an interesting blog. The authors seem to be talking about familiar concepts but do not actually mention Buddhism at all. Seems a bit like Zen to me but that may be me seeing a secular thing through religious lenses. https://youarealreadyenlightened.com . For me, the site is TL;DR. Are there a...

... I have worked with, and at times struggled with, how to be a teacher and a human being . Interesting. Reading the letter leads me to believe he's not struggling with being a human at all--he's got that down pat. Seems to me, the struggle is with being a bodhisattva. How do others interp...

Article: Spiritual healing — how Doctor Adrian Feldmann became Buddhist monk Thubten Gyatso

Spiritual healing — how Doctor Adrian Feldmann became Buddhist monk Thubten Gyatso Becoming a monk at the age of 32 was like enrolling in post-graduate studies in medicine, said Gyatso. To him, Buddhism is the "missing link" in medicine. "After five years of working as a doctor I knew that the basi...
