Re: Cosmology
Some people fight change, and others welcome it; the world is a mixture of old and new, which is good. Knowledge of Buddha makes a more peaceful world. Without knowledge of fungus, bacteria, the virus, etc., our life expectancy would be shorter. A mixture of old and new knowledge reduces suffering. ...

Adobe Earthquake Protection
Sorry, this should be in Lounge. To protect it from Peruvian earthquakes a school retrofit involved wrapping the walls in sheets of geomesh, a molded plastic grid resembling construction or chain link fencing. Geomesh is commonly used for stabilizing slopes and preventing soil erosion. Article: http...

Scientific Advancement in Causes of Autism
Two paragraphs: Potential clues to how autism miswires the brain are emerging from a study of a rare, purely genetic form of the disorders that affects fewer than 20 people worldwide. Using cutting-edge "disease-in a-dish" technology, researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health...

Re: Weight
Fatty foods, such as cheddar cheese, nuts and butter, margarine, cream, and sour cream are highest in calories per weight of food. Sugars are fast and easy to digest. Fatty sweet foods, like brownies are some of both.

Re: Romney outright lying about Obama in a campaign ad
Politicians in the US stretch the truth until it is like taffy candy. Then, they give it away to all those who are hungry for something good, but taffy candy is made only of sugar and oil with a little vinegar for flavoring (in other words, it is empty calories). Too many people have become so fat a...

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
Linux has vulnerabilities, but security updates are frequent and free. Moreover, if one only runs a personal user-id, instead of root (i.e., admin)--normal for Linux users--security breaches are very limited. One can disconnect from the internet to run root, which gives added protection. Any use of...

Re: Poll: Which Operating System Do You Use?
No virus scan just means you are willing to accept the consequences if and when your machine is penetrated. It's not like Linux is that difficult to penetrate, it's just more difficult that Windows. Computer security classes regularly demonstrate penetration techniques on Linux machines. I was shoc...

I still don't understand why we are lumping all "Windows" into the same category. Windows 7 is as secure as any other OS. I use the free Microsoft Security Essentials for AV Linux security has features that make it inherently more secure than any MS Windows platform, and the difficulty of...

Should we really seek out these things? It's never da Dharma dat causes deez sheet, it's always the deluded people want the "easy way out". It's much easier to join the mob and attack than cultivate one'self! It's the computer game way :) Just make sure none of you homeboys is going to jo...

Re: The Bad and The Ugly
Not to pick on any sect or nation as this comes from my general reading: Some Chinese and Japanese Buddhists often appealed to certian Mahayana sutras - like the Mahaparinirvana Sutra - which permitted killing to defend the Dharma, which may have included killing those who slandered the true doctri...

... The hardest part for me, is that I have a strong attachment to one person, I am unsure of the nature of this attachment, and it might be posessive desire, although this is combined with real feelings of love. For me, this is hard to over come. Attachment to my first wife was, upon separation, d...

Revise that to "Any Windows is complete crap" and I will agree. Whats wrong with Windows 7? I agree XP, Vista etc. are indeed crap. Three things, security, security and security. Historically, Windows had nice features but was fragile so crashed too often, but now it is more reliable--and...

Re: Reasons for Conventional Reality
That the Buddhist wold view is superior seemed obvious to me, as I began to read about Buddhism. Unfortunately, logical arguments have little affect on people who memorize and emote rather than learn and think; otherwise, the world would be filled with Buddhists and people similar to Buddhists. Log...

Re: Attachment
I think of Buddhist attachment as a mild obsession, rather than loving or liking. Although, attachment is not really a mild obsession; my thinking of it that way helps me to remember that attachment causes suffering. Loving and liking are good. However, realize that whatever you love or like may not...

Re: Reasons for Conventional Reality
Chapter 17 of MMK is a fine example of conventional reality in the Buddhist interpretation. The point of arguments are, however, not to debate others but to serve as logical reasons for the Buddhist world view. So if one were to investigate why one should believe in the Buddhist understanding of co...
