Re: Zoos and Pets

You do realise zoos are vital for the conservation effort don't you? Humans exert a huge pressure on ecosystems so we need to cultivate animals to top of natural populations to prevent extinction.

People paying to see them, it aids education and also pays for the zoos survival.

Re: What do you sit on during meditation?

Thanks,

that does actually look quite good. Currently, I sit on rolled up bankets and I lean against the wall th support my back. This may not sound great, but it was that long ago that the very idea of me sitting crossed legged was unthinkable.

Re: Garlic, leeks and onions

I have heard some indians say that onions cause aggression. Its a cutural teaching that actually isn't correct, I dont think there is any correlation between aggression and onion eating....but if people belived that eating onions could cause agression, you can see why it was warned not to eat them.

Re: Fish problem

As usual, thanks for all the nice reponses. Thanks very much. I have been thinking much about this the last few days. It is interesting to see the variety of responses. I still belive, at this moment, that the greater good is to farm fish...to stop would be to starve millions...although I appreciate...

Re: Fish problem

No, I am not listening to the marketing department, I am listening to the data. I am one of those who preaches such information, and I do it purely for ethical reasons..I wan't people to be healthy and children to grow up safely. You wont neccsarily be ill immediatly from not eating fish, but there ...

Re: Fish problem

Ok...your quotes are very apt. Very useful, thanks. To me, the important thing is that abandoning culturing fish is not benign, it would actively have a negative impact on the future of world food security and upon peoples health. It is not only unrealistic, but also damaging. From one perspective a...

Re: Fish problem

Thank you for the posts. I do not kill any animals myself, but in industry does. Without the industry, there will be a world food shortage as well as increased illness among human populations...it will result in starvation and death, and thus an increase in suffering. I dont think it is right that a...

Fish problem

I have an odd question. I work in the food production industry, mainly fish and aquatic products to be precise. I understand that Lamrim says that I should not engage in activities involved with killing animals. I do not kill animals, but I work closely with an industry that does. I am wondering wha...

Re: Eyes

Following the adice by PadmaVonSamba, about listening: I did this but with my eyes closed. I listened to all that was around me, but attempted to attached no thought to it. Thoughts came and went, and I ignored them, I just kept on listening. It worked the first time I tried it. I did it later on an...

Re: Eyes

Thank you for all the useful information. My problem remains the same, and that is that my object moves and switches erratically from one thing to another, thanks to attention defecit and OCD. :( At the moment, I am just accepting my situation and I try to enjoy whatever mediatation I can manage. O...

Re: Eyes

Just read over Sangeys' post. This is what I need to do: get my mind to a place where it is relaxed. I am unsure if this is possible with my mind the way it is.

Either way, I think the best tactic is to accept, as fighting wont help.

Re: Eyes

It takes a while for my mind to calm down, sometimes ten minutes. I cannot hold an object at all, although everyday I spend a while trying to do so. My concentration bounces about rapidly...bloomin attention defecit. However, I can contemplate quite well. I read some dharma and then I contemplate it...

Eyes

Throughout the course of the evening, I do a few different meditations. One I do with eyes partially open.

However, I sometimes need to blink when doing this, and this is distracting. Also, how wide open my eyes are becomes the focus of my mediatation. Any advice?

Thank you,

Steve
