Re: Is there anything wrong with smoking marijuana, as a Nichiren Buddhist?

I have incorporated medical marijuana licensing into my medical practice. As long as one ingests marijuana for a medical or psychiatric condition and not merely to get high, medical marijuana is no different than any traditional Western or Eastern therapy. In my opinion. taking marijuana to get high...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

Hi QQ. We have been conversing off and on since around 1995. Why don't you try practicing as Nichiren, performing a predominantly forceful (shakubuku) practice. Then your tome on the life and land of Nichiren will be complete: You will be so assailed by the Three Obstacles and Four Devils (as was Ni...

Nichiren's teachings on interfaith So happy are we who follow Nichiren Daishonin and the Lotus Sutra and not Daisaku Ikeda. “On the other hand, when I proclaim that the practitioners of the Nembutsu will fall into the hell of incessant suffering or declare that the Zen and True Word schools are like...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

The degradation of Lord Sakyamuni and the subsequent teachings that make like he was some transient Buddha...Gakki and ShoShu words...is not really going to bring a newcomer to the table with reality . I will attest that this is a huge hurdle to overcome, and one that some simply will not overcome....

Since when is it a bad thing to change your mind? Being able to change your mind is the mark of inner development. Only an idiot continues down a path out of pride that they know is detrimental . I think that's the whole point of everything good in the world - to transform for the better. Does it g...

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

According to Nichiren there is only one precept, NMRK. Following the 5 precepts is a supplementary practice, strictly speaking, and it can be encouraged. Because its really basically good advice on living an ethical life, and basically derives from the one precept. Supplementary? How so and, how do...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

I was reading the Three Kinds of Treasure gosho yesterday and was moved by the powerful declarations Nichiren has towards Shijo Kingo such as, "If you should fall into hell for some grave offense, no matter how Shakyamuni Buddha might urge me to become a Buddha, I would refuse; I would rather go to...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

Try writing the present day oligarchs about how support for Buddhadharma is the last, best hope of Earth, publically proclaim that we'd be better off if certain religions were banned and their leaders were beheaded, and declare that adherents to the dominant religion are barking up the wrong tree a...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

While I wouldn't go so far as to say certain *religions* would be banned or that *buddhadharma* specifically is the last best hope, I actually have considered writing such a statement to officials here that the dignity of life and inherent worth of each person (which is the heart of the Lotus Sutra...

I guess part of me reads this and forgets exactly how real it was, a benefit (or misfortune maybe?) I have for not living at this time in Japan! Re: Any Rissho Kosei-Kai members?

The Middle Way as it is commonly taught in all Buddhism ([中道] ( madhyamā-pratipad;  chūdō) is the path between nihilism and self-indulgence. The Buddha rejected asceticism. He also rejected greed. The Middle Way in traditional Mahayana is that reality can neither be adequately defined by existence...

Re: Something I'm missing....

For the past few years, I've been feeling like something is missing in my life and since I no longer identify as a Christian (walked away years ago) I've sought after a reference point, something to lean on and to provide me with tools to live in a better way. No matter what other religion or philo...

It's so sad that beauty fades and we get older. How do you all view getting older and losing your looks, etc?
I never was good looking so I will have nothing to lose, I reckon. My wife still lies to me that I am handsome or perhaps it's my shiny disposition.
