Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

There are several ways we may ascertain whether Namu Myoho renge kyo or Nam Myoho renge kyo is correct or more effective: Compare the behavior of those who chant Namu Myoho renge kyo with those who chant Nam Myoho renge kyo. For example those who chant Namu Myoho renge kyo don't worship a god-man o...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

I have to agree that shakabuku / shoju/any sort of propagation is part and parcel to Nichiren's Buddhism. Most Buddhist schools don't actively go into Proselytism , but this is different , for it is mappo and all of the Buddha's teachings other than Lotus sutra are counterfeit at this time. Buddhis...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

The problem is Mark, you don't understand my criticisms so your belief is simply that. A belief. Nichiren was much more than a scriptural Buddhist. I would be interested in seeing doctrine that says shakubuku via deep discourse of authentic gosho is preferable to daimoku. Were Nichiren Lotus Sutra ...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

Mark, I get that you are rebuking a variety of other Nichiren schools, to correct their (mine among them) behavior, but for clarity's sake could you detail the correct practices and attitudes? ie what is the profile of the correctly practicing Nichiren practitioner, activities, beliefs and so on? G...

Soka Gakkai yesterday and today

Yesterday: "Implicit in the March 16 ceremony was his [President Toda's] profound instruction that kosen-rufu must be carried out based solely on the Head Temple -- guidance which we must take deeply to heart. In this connection, the sixty-sixth high priest, Nittatsu Shonin, gave us guidance to the ...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

These two methods of shōju and shakubuku are like water and fire. Fire hates water, water detests fire. The practitioner of shōju laughs with scorn at shakubuku. The practitioner of shakubuku laments at the thought of shōju. When the country is full of evil people without wisdom, then shōju is the ...

Re: Why are some people so indecisive about which religion they believe in?

My understanding is that staying the course and following the Lotus Sutra is quite difficult. What advice would you give a person who keeps jumping at every other interesting religion? If a person finds something in Nichiren Buddhism that works and that they feel is true, why would they keep jumpin...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

I have more to say about your replies to me. “The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of shakubuku, the refutation of the provisional doctrines.” (pg. 392) Yui Yoga, for example, practiced by various Nichiren sects is a provisional doctrine. I am implored by Nichiren to refute such Zen and Shingon doctrines...

Nichiren affirms, faith is first and foremost [the primacy of faith] "The meaning of this passage is that, although you may not hold in your hand the eight scrolls that make up the Lotus Sutra, if you are a person who has faith in the sutra, then all twenty-four hours of the day you are one who “uph...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

Throwing up great amounts of supporting doctrine isn't compassionate if people can't digest and understand it. At best it might shame those of lower capacity who have to assume that it is correct. They have to be subject to shame for it to work. This will not convert the incorrigible. It assumes Ni...

Re: The Writings of Nichiren

Nichiren's true disciples don't pick and choose Nichiren like a Chinese buffet customer, 'I'll take the spare ribs but I don't like the salty fish." The few lines where Nichiren was sympathetic to the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings and the one passage where he acknowledged the exceedingly rarely to be us...

Nichiren on admonishing slanderers: “You should read again and again the previous letter in which I explained that one should of course obey one’s teacher, sovereign, and parents, but should they commit wrongs, admonishing them is in fact being loyal to them,” (The Three Obstacles and four Devils) “...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

One can practice forceful practice using a line of questioning/reasoning. One can make a point compassionately, taking some of the sting out of the force. Doesn't mean one need be any less persistent in one's efforts. What seed does one seek to sow? Seeds without peer. It is important to determine ...

“Now , when the Eternal Buddha was revealed in the essential section of the Lotus Sutra, this world of endurance (Saha-world) became the Eternal Pure Land, indestructible even by the three calamities of conflagration, flooding, and strong winds, which are said to destroy the world. They did so after hearing the Buddha make the concise replacement of the three vehicles with the one vehicle, and when the...

Re: Why is Nichiren Buddhism (or at least its organizations) so dysfunctional?

"It hurts me that many don't believe the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren and you know who they are." Why? In order to disbelieve in the sutra it has to be encountered. Once the sutra is encountered that person will eventually achieve buddhahood. According to the teachings previously they could not. At thi...
