Re: Goals & Non-Attachment

In the Soka Gakkai dictionary of Buddhism, we read: eight winds [八風] ( happū): Eight conditions that prevent people from advancing along the right path to enlightenment. According to The Treatise on the Stage of Buddhahood Sutra—Bandhuprabha’s work that was translated into Chinese by Hsüan-tsang—th...

Re: 他力/"Other-power" in 淨土十疑論/"Ten Doubts"

There are Four Powers, the Power of Faith, the Power of Practice, the Power of the Buddha and the Power of the Law. The first two are cause generated. The latter two are condition generated, eternal and unchanging. All Four Powers, both causes and conditions must be correct. Nichiren writes along th...

Re: Are there any schools of Mahayana or Vajrayana Buddhism that do not ascribe to the view that all is one mind?

The Nichiren Lotus Sutra school has this to say: "The essence of the sutras preached before the Lotus Sutra is that all phenomena arise from the mind. To illustrate, they say that the mind is like the great earth, while the grasses and trees are like all phenomena. But it is not so with the Lotus Su...

Haven't read this edition but an important passage to me is the following: Ashvaghosha the Buddhist genius "As the World-honored one, considering the inferior intellectual caliber of Shravakas (Men of Learning) and Pratyekabuddhas (Men of Self Realization), taught them only the doctrine of the non-p...

Re: The profound meaning of Nichiren's Daimoku

Excellent. I would add, "The manifestation of Shakyamuni's enlightenment is to realize the ten realms with one's own life.", to realize the Ten Worlds Mutual Possession, and ultimately to realize the Three Thousand Realms in a single moment of life.

Re: The Writings of Nichiren

Our teacher, the Thus Come One Shakyamuni, in the course of his lifetime of teaching, expounded eighty thousand sacred doctrines. He was the first Buddha to appear in this saha world of ours, which previously had not known any Buddha, and he opened the eyes of all living beings. All the other Buddh...

If this runs contrary to the TOS, please feel free to delete it. My purposes in establishing this thread are largely in the interest of gathering proofs of orthodoxy in Nichiren Buddhism(s), not to proliferate heterodoxy. I would like to continue this dialogue, concerning misinterpretation of the d...

Re: Is this a statue of the Buddha?

Yes, it is Buddha (Gautama). The hand reaching for the ground signifies when Buddha attained enlightenment and the earth was his witness to his full awakening. And the robe with one shoulder on, one off, is also typical of a Buddha statue. Thank you! After staring at it intently for awhile, I start...

Did you ask this persons permission to publish your correspondence?
She was deceased when I published her correspondence and it was on a public forum, Buddha Jones. Is that OK with you?

Re: What do you do when someone you love leaves you feeling devalued and insignificant?

If the person you love UNJUSTLY leaves you feeling devalued and insignificant, there is nothing to do. What goes around comes around and they will never find fulfillment. Chanting Daimoku with a correct faith and you will find someone who will value your importance. They too can find fulfillment, de...

Nichiren on Fire and Water "Among the people who believe in the Lotus Sutra today, some people's faith is like fire and other's faith is like water. Some people are aroused like burning fire during a sermon, but once they go away they forget all that they heard. When I say 'like water,' I mean a per...

Hello Richard. Thanks for sharing your letter. Have you returned to Soka Gakkai from Nichiren Shoshu or returned as an Independent who only chants Nam Myoho renge kyo sans Gongyo?

Evidence the Ongi Kuden is a Forgery: In the Ongi Kuden we read: “This Myoho-renge-kyo (Lotus Sutra) is not Shakyamuni’s Mystic Law, because at the time this chapter was preached, he had already entrusted it to Bodhisattva Jogyo.” (Gosho, p. 1783) In the Kanjin Honzon Sho (The True Object of Worship...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

According to Nichiren, depending on the TIME, even the non-Buddhist teachings have lead to Enlightenment. Nichiren teaches, however, that the non-Buddhist teachings that led to Enlightenment only did so because the practitioners had practiced the Lotus Sutra in many previous lifetimes. Nichiren teac...

I don't know about lack of faith. Who's to say? But for regular marijuana users, I believe the use of marijuana may trigger, feed and sustain attachments formed in the mind. That's how I view it.
Interesting.
