Re: Synchronicity In Buddhism

When I first met my SGI sponsors, I was told that nothing is a coincidence. The little old pioneer women were very keen on noticing minute details, small synchronicities, and oddly enough such synchronicities seemed to follow them wherever they went. In fact, the day my gohonzon was enshrined was m...

Re: Reading more widely

A good basic book is The Buddhist Tradition: In India, China and Japan by William Theodure de Bary Mark I just recommended that book to my wife for her class. I loved his depiction of the Pot-headed monk Nisshin. Here is another depiction of my hero, Nisshin from http://seattlebuddhist.org/...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

Thanks for the replies guys, the is really interesting The SGI lecturers maintain that we choose to be born into various circumstances [highlighting unfavorable circumstances] in order to eventually win and demonstrate the greatness of the Mystic Law. They use as an example the Bodhisattva Wonder S...

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

AFAIK, the Buddha never polemicized against or for the Cārvāka. Do they postdate him? Apparently not; I recall a passage in the Lotus Sutra admonishing disciples not to hang with them. And there we go, Sukhavihāraparivarta Ch 14: admonishes to neither associate with 伽耶陀, Lokāyatikāḥ , nor 逆路伽耶陀, Vā...

I think the Christian main argument is teleological, all complex things like a watch or automobile has been created. The world and un...

Good will to all of you! Re: superstition and Nichiren's Teachings

I was always under assumption that buddhism would always hold up to scientific investigation. In the thread on atheism some of the material got me to thinking . these are the main culprits! One of the things to be mindful of, is that many of the arguments deployed by atheism against Christianity al...

Re: Reading more widely

Whenever I come to this forum I am more and more impressed by how ignorant I am of the wider Buddhist Sangha and how Nichiren's Buddhism fits in with with Buddhism generally. If I want to read outside of the SGI, do people have some suggestions for books? I'm not interested in sectarian bunfights, ...

Re: Are Nichiren Buddhists usually conservative on liberal issues or?

I have heard that many Nichiren sects in Japan are traditionally conservative. I'm wondering if this is true and to what extent if so. In SGI they taught us that there are no coincidences. A prominent symbol of the Buddha is the elephant... Democrat or Republican, they all affirm our more t...

Re: The Kempon Hokke Doctrine of the Transmission Through the Scrolls

Question: If a person simply chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with no understanding of its meaning, are the benefits of understanding thereby included? Answer: When a baby drinks milk, it has no understanding of its taste, and yet its body is naturally nourished. Who ever took the wonderful medicines of ...

Re: The Kempon Hokke Doctrine of the Transmission Through the Scrolls

Here are three essays on the Transmission from the perspective of the Kempon Hokke. The first is a debate between a Nichiren Shoshu adept and A Kempon Hokke adept (me): https://markrogow.blogspot.com/2018/08/is-transmission-in-latter-age-face-to.html The second is a more or less complete view from N...

Re: Biography of Hosoi Nittatsu

He was a sincere teacher and genuine scholar, well respected not just within Nichiren Shoshu, but in the greater Nichiren community. He was the real deal. Spent many years traveling and compiling gosho. You reproduced his Gohonzon. Look at that hand - clear and readable. The thing about calligraphy...

Re: The Kempon Hokke Doctrine of the Transmission Through the Scrolls

If Nichiren contemplated all the sutra as the source of transmission, he could not have taught this. I dunno 'bout that. To an extent, Jazz is Ricky has a point. Now, I admired the individual's spirit but I honestly never read most of their posts after a certain point. Which points were pertinent? ...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

The Buddha in the Lotus Sutra teaches of a world where the physiologic method of reproducing is parthenogenesis. Is it a metaphor or is it something else? Is the Treasure Tower a metaphor only? Bodhisattvas 500 feet tall on other worlds? Flying cars? Some things are fruitless to question or contempl...

Is there a good book out there that I can read on the Lotus Sutra that is a commentary on each chapter or portion? Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

I'm really not trying to be cute here. LOL. Given that this is a Tibetan chant, I would guess it doesn't have the tangled history with Nichiren Buddhism that, say, the Nembutsu does. Sometimes I just think I'd like to chant that. I've always had an affinity for Tibetan Buddhism. It isnt a Tibetan c...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

Now, I would like to speak a little about the Bodhisattvas of the Earth. They are those who received the Law of Namu Myoho renge kyo from Shakyamuni Buddha of the Juryo chapter of the Lotus Sutra in the remotest past and who spread the Law in this Latter Age. There are Four Great Leaders of the Bodh...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

Here is an SGI lecture on voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma and my comments: http://www.sgi-usa.org/memberresources/video/iwa/2015/jul_2/?v=jul2_15 It is a most superficial lecture. It not only fails to lecture on The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra Chapter 16 to which it is entitled, "The Lifesp...

SGI's teachings: It is your karma to fight and struggle and give your hard earned money to those whose karma it is to do the same work as you and earn upwards of a half a million dollars a year. Don't blame the Vice Presidents of the SGI for their good karma, look at your own bad karma. Actually, yo...
