Re: logic behind NMRK?

Bumping this thread as I've thought of more questions which might move the conversation forward: 1) If you lack faith in NMRK then will it work? The way I understand it, the first time you hear the dharma (i.e. NMRK or LS) then you have a connection that can never be broken. you may not believe in ...

Re: logic behind NMRK?

This has always been something I can't understand: what is the logic or theory behind why chanting NMRK manifests in enlightenment? from a historical perspective, on what ground did Nichiren say that chanting has any effect? The logic, in its simplest, is this: Out of his compassion toward the igno...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

There are various teaching methods employed by the Buddha in the Lotus Sutra... Teaching methods are methods used by someone to explain something. Methods of attaining awakening in common Mahāyāna are restricted to the six perfections. The six perfections take a long time to complete, birth after b...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

Our teachers are Shakyamuni Buddha of the Juryo Chapter of the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren Daishonin, teachers without peer. Mark In this sūtra, including the chapter you mention, there is no actual method demonstrated for an ordinary person to attain buddhahood in a single lifetime. Read Chapter 17 a...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

Ven Zhiyi is pre-Yogacara, in the sense that he was writing in a time before Yogacara became highly prominent as a mainstream discourse. It was still in the stages of disseminating in China at the time. That is also something to keep in mind when comparing Tiantai & Tiantai stolon schools to other ...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

You don't have to be born as a human, specifically as a human male to reach liberation. In order to attain buddhahood, one must be born a human being with eight freedoms and ten endowments. One cannot attain buddhahood if one is born in any other condition— hell being, preta, animal, asura, or deva...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

Do note that Tibetan Buddhism itself is not a homoegenous system, with different schools espousing a differing approaches and views(very likely Jan Nattier didn't realize this). So arguably the geshe in reference would likely be a Gelugpa(though I might be wrong). The Gelugpa position on this is no...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

The Lotus is the universal gate by which all enter the Buddhapath. BTW, the Lotus is not the only sūtra which teaches ekayāna, upaya, etc. And, in fact, it is pretty thin, doctrinally-speaking, lacking the richness of the PP sūtras, Samdhinirmocana, Lanka, when it comes to explanations of emptiness...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

There are various teaching methods employed by the Buddha in the Lotus Sutra: simile; metaphor; parable [of which there are seven]; skillful or expedient means; logic; historical precedent; narration [current events and prior birth stories]; questions and answers; and most importantly, a direct expo...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

Right, I don't accept either Zhiyi;s interpretation or Nichiren's of the Lotus Sūtra — I respect it, but I see no reason to believe it. It is a Sino-sphere thing, relevant only to it, based on a very parochial interpretation of what sūtras Buddha taught when during his lifetime. If one does not acc...

Nichiren's ability to survive far exceeded other religious and secular figures

There are two types of benefits in chanting Namu Myoho renge kyo, inconspicuous and conspicuous. Referring to inconspicuous benefits, Nichiren teaches: "Why do you not, if only this once, try planting the wonderful seeds that lead to eternal and unchanging Buddhahood? Though at present you may taste...

Re: If our honesty is hurtful to some, should we remain silent?

I actually deleted recently. Deciding on a new title. Hi everyone! So the reason I'm asking this question is because I currently am blogging about Nichiren Buddhism and I want to share a bit about my life, how I grew up and what I went through. My family has my blog address and I'm worried that my ...

so like i really thought this whole life in a pure land and life after death and looking down on the saha world from above was just weirded out Abrahamic thinking , but in an ancient deluded Eastern Thought way of thinking. i read Gosho after gosho and the referance to this just hit me ''like I HAV...

Re: Shakubuku and shoju a few thoughts

Kaimoku-sho ( The Opening of the Eyes ) is one of Nichiren's most important writings. Great Concentration and Insight (Zhiyi's Mohezhikuan ) says: “There are two ways to spread the Buddha’s teachings. The first is called shōju and the second is called shakubuku. When the ‘Peaceful Practices’ chapte...

all of which opens up the hell gates of fake news.... No. Devadatta still suffers retribution for being a false teacher. In this world, he fell directly into Avici Hell alive - the ground opened up and he fell into the ground. Maybe he stumbled on a sink hole. However, once you learn that a teacher...
