Re: So, you read pirated books?

... there is something unique to sitting down with that hefty Sunday paper and working through it with a cup of coffee. This exactly. It's what makes a frigid February Sunday morning bearable, and offers at least the semblance of something cosmopolitan for those of us trapped where an evening out m...

Re: So, you read pirated books?

I believe everyone gets 10 free articles a month. If journalism is important to you, consider a subscription to your local paper. Yes, that's true, but no free articles if you use private browsing mode. My local paper I can read online, 10 free articles/day. I'd love to have a print subscription to...

Re: America is hooked on violence

America has always been hooked on violence and has been at perpetual war for years now.... I used to think Americans are evolved beyond the possibility of devolving into a French Revolution sort of orgy of violence, but I'm not at all convinced of that anymore and suspect we might be closer to one ...

Re: Cold Showers

With Polar Bear Plunges there are some pretty crazy physical effects - including cardiovascularly. I'm wondering how much you can change your reactions to it with intentional practice. First, sorry for the double post above, edit went awry somehow. Yes, the body can be slowly acclimated to cold by ...

I haven’t tested it myself, but it’s scientifically proven, I’ve heard, that putting your face in cold water slows the heart rate.
Try an experiment. Get a pan of ice water, put your hand in for 1-2 minutes. See what happens to your heart rate.

Re: Cold Showers

For those with a scientific bent, here's a link to a controlled study in which some participants were coached by Hof. Very interesting results, not a large sample size and limited to healthy young (19-27) subjects, but nevertheless intriguing. Also interesting that meditators were excluded from the ...

Re: Zen Bug

Some quick googling came up with a book called Seeking the Cave: A Pilgrimage To Cold Mountain by James P. Lenfestey. It includes a reference to the Chinese character for "cicada" being made of the character for "Zen" plus the character for "bug." Several other sites referenced the sound of the cica...

Unfortunately, a lot of that Tricycle information is no longer operative.
Do you mean that the stupas are no longer there?

Re: boring questions about losing weight

Interesting. I suppose bodies are different. I'm a grazer, rarely eat what others would call "a meal," total maybe 1200cal/day. Been vegetarian for 37 years with a tiny bit of lacto/ovo, do some cardio-type exercise daily, do yoga, physically active at home (gardening, moving firewood, etc). My body...

Re: boring questions about losing weight

I have been doing intermittent fasts continuously for more than 20 years now. I eat only once a day (every day except weekends) and feel no hunger during the day. I am now 60 years old and have the same weight I had when I was 20.... You didn't mention, but I am assuming you are not vegetarian? Als...

Re: Antifa at it again

“The only defense against violent, evil people are good people who are more skilled at violence.” I'm not sure it's skill. It's the majority actually revealing itself to be a majority, rather than remaining indifferent....least bad option. +1, excellent summary. May I quote your post on another sit...

Self-described as "Rogue journalist. Bogan socialist. Anarcho-psychonaut. Guerrilla poet. Utopia prepper." :rolleye:

Re: Do any of you use social media to spread Dharma?

My only caveat would be, when you quote the Buddha or a text, make sure you quote accurately from a reliable source. Do a google search for "Buddha quotes" or "Dalai Lama quotes" and almost everything you find is new age BS.

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)

Yes, you would think that those opposed to abortion would get behind Planned Parenthood , an organization that actively works to prevent unplanned pregnancies, and thus abortions - but no, that's sacrilege as well. Every intercourse must be open to reproduction. Thus, funding for PP has been cut und...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)

Pro life? Then let's work on abolishing the death penalty together, caring for people, making the loving society we all want. Let's do it. There is a non-partisan non-denominational group called Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) that does just that. It promotes a "consistent life ethic" https://en.w...
