Re: The world is getting worse and worse

The Earth could easily accommodate the current population and then some, if it weren't for ... Now if people would ... Big If's - as my mother used to say, If pigs had wings, they'd fly. Because of course western people from abrahamic & secular backgrounds are the ones who are 'educated', and their...

Re: Job help!

Tharpa Chodron here on DW has experience with social work, I think, she may be able to help you. Singapore may be different, but in the US a Master's Degree is required, pay is not that great, and hours are long. The work can be very rewarding, but very difficult, depending on your clientele. Social...

Trump Warns That President Oprah Would Force Americans to Read. “People were worried about Obama coming to their homes and taking away their guns,” Trump said. “Oprah will come to your homes and leave books there, which is far, far worse.” https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/trump-warns-...

Re: The Future

But given the fact that many of us turned to Dharma because of our disillusionment with materialism it might be that for younger people social media might eventually be the 'schoolteacher' that leads them to Dharma. I hope for their sake you're right. That may still leave the issue of direct oral t...

Re: The Future

I really dislike all these characterizations of millennial as "safe space" snowflakes or whatever... And yet One thing that might be fairly widespread though, is a dislike of boomer culture. "Boomer culture" (whatever that is) is no more homogeneous than "Millennial culture." Just sayin.' One inter...

Re: Random Thoughts

Good story. Again and again it appears to me that doctors do not know as much about life and death as they think Not sure about European doctors, but American doctors get next-to-no death education. When I worked hospice, we frequently admitted patients whose doctors had told them they had months t...

Yeah, this. Ten years of my life down the drain (up my nose?) with drugs, the thrill is gone. :toilet:

Re: Weed is now legal in California

California resident here. :) I caught a bit of CNN's New Year's eve coverage last night, just hearing Anderson Cooper talking about "Sativa" and "Kush" was sort of funny. California also outlawed asking people about their criminal history in job applications. People still smoke weed? And s...

Re: Sexuality, Marriage, Promiscuity and the Dharma

Not 100% sure about this but a married buddhist man can go see hookers on the side and not break the sexual misconduct precept. If a man were ever to do this in modern western society all hell would break loose and would be like an episode on jerry springer. Did you mean, "if a [married? buddhist?]...

Re: Super Moon again!

Fun fact - The term "supermoon" only appeared about 40 years ago, and only in popular culture much more recently. It's actually taken from modern astrology; the astronomical term is "perigee syzygy of the Earth–Moon–Sun system."

Re: New Tax Plan is a war on the Disabled, Poor, and a Boon to the Rich, Corperations, and Foreign Trade partners of the

This has been the Trump agenda all along - steal from the poor, give to the rich, and try to con the middle class into thinking he's doing them and the country a favour. I just wish there were enough Republicans with a sense of social justice to have stopped it. Agreed, classic tactics for a despot...

Re: Cutting hair

It's not an idea, generally woman can only win a fight with a man by attacking the testicles. If she can also pull your long hippie hair then it will make her feel even less threatened. This is science people. Women view men as potential predators. Actually I view men as potential predators as well...
