Re: Fiction with Buddhist influences

Eliot Pattison's Inspector Shan series of murder mysteries is set in Tibet and is really well done. Very enjoyable if you like the genre. http://www.eliotpattison.com/inspector.html

Re: Sh#t is f@cked up and bull sh*t

Interesting article, thanks for posting. I couldn't find a date on it, it seems to have been written pre-2016 election? Several disparate comments: 1) The instances of small town/small business rejuvenations are encouraging. These projects can provide the impetus for growth, but I'm not sure that th...

Re: What is the best way to deal with an overly inquisitive/suffocating friend?

You can try the friendly, joking approach -"Is this a test?!"

Or the flip-it-back approach - "Why do you ask?"

Or if it's really bothering you, just say so. "I prefer not to answer, " or, "I feel uncomfortable when you ask so many questions, it's invasive. Please stop."

Re: Sh#t is f@cked up and bull sh*t

Great article. Possibly the most succinct, unbiased summary of the origins of our current shitstorm I've read. Will be passing this one along. Hindsight is of course 20/20. I'd love to read an article as cogently written on what options we have for the future. Recommendations? "Prudence, indeed, wil...

Also, Jains have very strict dietary restrictions and avoid the five pungents (onions, garlic, leeks, chives, green onions; some Buddhists do this as well). Interesting article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jain_vegetarianism

It occurs to me that “An Olive Branch” would most likely not have a license to practice law in Canada. Or France, where they have been mentioned in regards to the Rigpa situation also. Here is An Olive Branch's website https://www.an-olive-branch.org/ . Here are the princpals https://www.an-olive-b...

Re: Deathbed visions

Without being a specialist in neuropharmacology, I can only speculate that perhaps the varied chemicals produced during the dying process could stimulate different areas of the brain, producing particular types of hallucinations. I have no idea how one would go about researching this, as there is no...

Re: Deathbed visions

From a strictly physiological, Western medicine point of view, the "normal" process of death includes increasing hypoxia with decreasing levels of oxygen in the body and increasing levels of carbon dioxide. Hallucinations are a well known and documented effect of hypoxia. Other chemical levels are i...

Re: Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche

It is about him. There are identifying details in the article that one who is familiar with his sangha can pick up on. Also, In the original thread, Malcolm posted this link which clearly links the author to Kongtrul Rinpoche's sangha. https://archive.li/Go0ik That link goes to a page about a trans...

Re: Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche

My one experience with him dates to 2010, when I attended a weekend event where he hosted Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche Yangsi at Pema Osel in Vermont. The teachings seemed very traditional and orthodox, and he explained some difficult concepts very clearly. The sangha members seemed to be serious student...

Re: Scary Liberal Views and Policy Positions?

the notion of a 'constructed social identity' would not naturally align with that, as it is presumably amongst the things that is to be renounced. The problem there, as I see it, at least in the West, is that the default "normal" identity, as it were, is always "white, cis, het" and is not consider...

"So far this year, more students have been killed in schools than soldiers in combat zones." Rated mostly true.
