Re: Prayers for His Holiness Gyalwang Karmapa 17

Thank you for the long life prayer, Vasana.

HH Karmapa's official website mentions that HH is in New York for treatment, but the illness is not named.

Re: Socialism & Communism

Did some digging, just out of curiosity. Seems there are now only five communist countries remaining in the world - China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam. The only major player there, China, changed the country's constitution in 2004 to recognize private property. And it seems like a capitalis...

Re: Exhaling Stale Breath

When a person at rest breathes, approximately 500ml of air is exchanged between the lungs and the environment; the full capacity of the lungs is not exchanged with each breath. When the person exercises and increases breathing rate and depth, greater amounts of air are exchanged. Here is more inform...

Re: Physical pain and anger

The human body typically responds to an external insult (ie, a sudden source of pain) with an autonomic nervous system jolt. A "fight or flight" reaction occurs with a big release of the adrenaline which would be needed. So an unexpected cat scratch can trigger an adrenaline rush, which your mind ma...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

This video is the typical NRA propaganda designed to inflame fear (of Predators! Coming to get ya! Kill or be killed!) that is at the root of the problem, IMO.

So OK, if that is the case, why not issue every man, woman, and child in the US a gun and then we'll all be equal and safe?

What crap.

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

WTF is wrong with your society? When will you finally wake up? Will you ever grow a brain? Not sure if your questions are rhetorical, so...quick answer, pro-gun advocates are well funded, well organized, and fed a constant diet of stories that provoke fear responses in many people. TPTB such as the...

Re: Not feeling totally safe around my dad

You don't mention how old you are, but you did say you are moving overseas for a new career, so I'm assuming you are an adult of legal age. Therefore, you are responsible for your own behavior, not that of your parents. You are staying in their house - for free? - until time to move, so when under a...

Re: Appropriate Material for Prostration Board?

That is exactly what we used, to slide easier you can put a pair of socks on your hands. /magnus Right, forgot about the socks. And I also used a small folded piece of tapestry (you could use towels, a small cushion, etc.) at the bottom edge in case I missed and dropped my ancient knees right on th...

Re: Appropriate Material for Prostration Board?

I used a sheet of masonite cut to size. It's a thin piece of pressed board that has a rough side and a smooth side, works well over carpet as the rough side helps prevent the board from sliding. It has a bit of flexibility as well and is lightweight, easy to store. Readily available at big box home ...

Re: Morality of stockholding

There are several different questions in there, I'll break it down a bit. These are big issues, so this is just a simplified view. Let's first agree that the reason companies are created is to make a profit. That being said, Do you think is it immoral to own shares in a company that makes profits fr...

This new reddish color.... It made me wonder if there was an error with my monitor. That was my thought as well. On the board index page, the header is a reddish brown, under that a beige, and the sections are pink fading to tan. I guess my graphics card is further gone than I thought. :techproblem:

Scott Peck's definition has always rung true to me: “Love is the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth....Love is an act of will - namely, both an intention and an action. Will also implies choice. We do not have to love. We choose to love.” F...

You said it, that's exactly what you're doing - using someone. Thinking that is somehow a kindness is self-deception.

This may be a part of the human condition, but you don't have to participate in it or support it.

In the natural world when populations become grossly unbalanced, some type of natural correction usually occurs.

We are already seeing the appearance of "superbugs" for which their are no effective antibiotics. My guess is at some point in the not too distant future we're in for a pandemic.

Re: Assisted Suicide/ euthanasia

Anecdotally, in my four years as a hospice nurse I never saw a patient die who was conscious immediately prior, they were all unresponsive. Granted, some had large quantities of narcotics/sedatives/anxiolytics on board, but by no means all. In a "natural" death, the normal progression of bodily shut...
