Loosing my way on the path.

Hey folks, Well... It's probably best I start on a positive note. This past couple of years I have turned my life around. Due to alcoholism this time last year I'd nearly lost all of my friends, alienated my family and I was slowly killing myself, if the bottle didn't kill me then I eventually would...

Never really introduced myself so... Hello!

Hey there, First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone on the forum. I have learned a great deal but admittedly I have only really posted when I was very depressed, close to relapse or at the bottom of a bottle (I found Buddhism through alcoholism... a healthy swap I would say!) An...

Re: A severe period of depression

Thank you for all of your kind words. I think actually getting it off my chest has helped a lot - knowing this is only temporary is a comforting feeling even though it's been a long time, it's easy to loose faith. I'll always have the thought that I do actually care where a lot of others don't. It's...

A severe period of depression

Normally I would not ask for prayers to be said for myself but I feel this is coming from a sincere wish cope with this so that I might help others. I have overcome alcoholism at 24 and everyday I fight it's causes. I say my thanks everyday for not being in the grips of a bottle - and I suppose what...

Re: Can other religions lead to enlightenment?

I do believe it could be possible within another religion but very difficult. In most cases it does require correct direction and a good teacher. A lot of spiritual leaders are directly or indirectly affected by corruption in their religions, particularly within Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The ...

Re: Suicide and Murder

Ah... I've wiled away many hours with teachers discussing this subject! Obviously murder in a no brainer... very bad karma. But despite this there is the question of if you knew what Hitler planned to do would you kill him? I personally don't think I could kill anyone but then in not killing him (be...

Re: "Purifying" karma?

As for purification practices in the Mahayana tradition, and I am by no means an advanced practitioner, I was taught Vajrasattva practice as a means to purify karma from both this life and previous ones. Vajrasattva is the embodiment of the purification powers of all the Buddhas. Of course it must b...

Re: A prayer for me please

Thankyou both for your thoughts. I decided to take refuge about 6 months ago and recite the prayer before my daily practice... i just have to keep focused, both eyes on the path. It's far too easy to fall astray but I have confidence this time. Letting go of the guilt is the hardest part of all of t...

Re: Prayers for those working through addiction

I know exactly how it feels. It often feels like a hopeless situation. Thanks for caring about us... addiction is often a problem that gets overlooked as people just wanting to get off their tree. I know it's not a happy place. He will be in my prayers along with myself.

Re: Real Marijuana as Herbal Medicine?

All I know know from marijuana is that people think it doesn't have many side effects. The worst (if smoking in any amount to help pain) is laziness. It has a really bad habit of demotivating people. It makes you content with doing nothing.

A prayer for me please

Hey everyone, I'm currently 23... I have had problems with addiction for around three years now, luckily I had the intelligence to know something had to be done. A year and a half I moved back home and started to sort my life out. I gave up everything. I have had relapses but i got straight back on ...

Meal time prayer

Hey guys! I've been wondering if anyone knows of an easy to learn (or not) Tibetan prayer to give thanks before meals. I find it an important part of eating to consider where it has come from, how it got to me and to be thankful. Food isn't exactly a given commodity in many parts of the world so it'...

Prayers mainly for my father, but a little for me!

Hey all, I came down with food poisoning 2 days ago. Reaaaaally unwell! I have chanted the short medicine Buddha a few times (as in 108) but I have a feeling there are bigger things to worry about. I am looking after myself to the best of my ability! Keeping myself hydrated and nibbling Pringles slo...

Re: Curious feelings/experiences during meditation.

Thankyou for all your advice. I try to help others only to the capacity that I can. My current problems need to be overcome and I have been very aware of that for some years... long before my practice. I think you are right... these things I am noticing are side tracking me... The most useful thing ...

Re: Curious feelings/experiences during meditation.

I have decided maybe now is the time to study... as in learn/study a lot more. Before many of the sutras didn't really make a lot of sense to me. I should concentrate on developing a good knowledge of Mahayana tradtion and teachings for the time being.

Re: Curious feelings/experiences during meditation.

I have already experienced lapses in the quality of my practice. When I notice, I just keep faith, again as I have been taught- I dont beat myself up about it and continue as normal. I also try to go about my daily business with mindfulness, as clear as I can be. It's amazing what it's done for the ...

Curious feelings/experiences during meditation.

I have considered myself a Buddhist for around 4-5 months now. I have been learning slowly, the best lesson one of my teachers taught me! I always love to dive into things so when I come with a million questions she always tells me to slow down. She said the Tibetans have a common saying of "slowly ...

I never heard of a gratuity list... but it's a great idea. I just started and I can't stop :rolling: I think this could be very useful. Thanks again Dave.
