Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

Some things take longer than others. An aspiration is always the beginning. If it takes you 1,000 aspirations to finally make a positive change, then it would be a shame if you stopped at 999. I'm sorry there are things that seem stuck, I'm familiar with that situation. It really does just take time...

Re: Liberate all living beings

:good: Thank you, the quote ties in nicely with the benefits of things such as dharanis, mantras, and the names of buddhas. For instance, Master Shandao says mindfulness of Amida itself teaches right mindfulness of Amida. Master Honen says Amida's name is a vessel of Amida's countless buddha virtues...

Re: Choosing between Chan, Zen, Jìngtǔzōng, and Jōdo Shinshū

For Shin reading, Shinran Works is probably already in your list but worth mentioning. I've found an occasional lack of clarity around Shinran's (and Honen's) teaching in third-party sources. Reading Honen and Shinran directly makes me want to say nembutsu rather than think about it. I think that's ...

It is through taking pleasure in space that one understands all the doctrines.
Fascinating. What does it mean here?

The important thing is to get a practice book, beads and start chanting Amida's name!

Re: Published books with Pure Land practice instruction?

My only caution about the Daily Practices book that Sonam mentions is that if you're generally new to Mahayana, it's a dive into the deep end. I second the recommendation for "Going Home to the Pure Land" by Shi Wuling. It's Chinese Pure Land and includes reciting the Shorter Sutra, as well as the r...

Re: Is the Pure Land an actual place?

Welcome.
This is a realm with characteristics of delusion and suffering. The Pure Land is a buddha-field with characteristics of Amida's 48 Vows and bliss.

Re: Published books with Pure Land practice instruction?

Promise of Amida does contain theory and practice instructions, but since it's a collation of Master Honen's writings, there's some amount of repetition. It can also be hard to track which letter contains which teachings. The intro provides a summary of each writing, which helps somewhat. His One-Sh...

And practices support and contain each other. For instance, when you interrupt a thought to return to nembutsu, that's "stopping" as a support for nembutsu. If, during anger, you think "this is an affliction" and return to the method, that's insight. Or if you rouse the strong determination to be bo...

:good: I like to share links, quotes, and such on Reddit. I have a Pure Land Tumblr but I've restarted it a few times. Time to add some stuff to the queue again
I think if someone responds positively to the beauty of a thangka or statue for example, that's a very good thing for them.

Re: Sutras To Enshrine At Home

Yes, for example :) I have in mind sutras that specifically enumerate benefits for those who copy, enshrine, or even just have the sutra in their home, such as the bolded sections in the passages above. E.g. the section in the Infinite-Life Resolute Radiance King Tathāgata which begins, "If there ar...

Sutras To Enshrine At Home

Thanks to Rulu's site , I found these sutras which, if enshrined, bring measureless benefit to the practitioner and to everyone in or near the house  Please include any additional sutras you know of that bring benefit just from being copied or enshrined. :buddha1: 佛說大乘聖無量壽決定光明王如來陀羅尼經 Buddha P...

Re: We dont exist anywhere?

Shantideva's work spans teachings on how to reveal uncontrived compassion as well as a chapter on the Perfection of Wisdom at the end that may interest you. If you read the other chapters first, you'll know how to integrate this experience you have so that it brings happiness to yourself and others....

Re: We dont exist anywhere?

Buddhas are not only immeasurably wise but also immeasurably compassionate. Emptiness of self and others is our buddha-potential, there's no conditioned self to keep authority or to have the final say. Impermanence of self and others is where the merits necessary to realize buddhahood, i.e. virtue a...
