Re: OCD

Lama Zopa Rinpoche has written beautifully on such conditions. I don't have OCD but rather depression. I hope his input below, which I've found helpful, can be beneficial here as well. When we have depression, we can also think about the numberless other sentient beings who have depression, and we c...

Re: Prayer to Namgyalma

Bumping this old topic because of the wonderful information it contains. I don't practice Gelug. I hadn't heard of Namgyalma until browsing the FPMT online store. The beautiful circular design caught my eye ... and it's free to download! I've long had a problem with insomnia, as well as waking up ex...

Re: Multiple teachers, Tibetan and Tendai, is that ok?

Not mixing practices from different lineages is common advice, and there are reasons for it.
As severely deluded people, we aren't in a position to reinvent the wheel.

Re: forgiveness

I get that one can construct/imply a teaching of forgiveness from the Buddha’s teachings, but there doesn’t seem to be a direct teaching. If the sight of me inspires in others Thoughts of anger or devotion, May such states of mind be causes For eternally fulfilling their desires. May those who insu...

Re: Practicing and Finding a Teacher when you live in the middle of nowhere

Greetings, Veturgeir. A sangha is important. The usual advice is to supplicate the buddhas and bodhisattvas for help in finding your teacher and sangha. In the meantime, you can always study the teachings, familiarize yourself with bodhicitta, and refine your behavior in daily life. Additionally, pr...

Re: Buddhist Cuisine - Shojin Ryori Recipes

Hi, hannya. Welcome to Dharma Wheel. Buddhists generally try to view food as medicine for the body, rather than a source of pleasure-seeking or extravagance. The body is a vital support for practicing the Dharma, so we want to keep it in good shape. Beyond that, there isn't a universal Buddhist diet...

Re: Generosity

You will not save an addict by refusing to give some change. Once you're a buddha, you'll be better placed to help them. For now, do what you can towards that end. To me that means giving a few dollars and reaffirming your vows to save all beings, such as this one. YMMV.

Yes, of course. Here is a prayer used in the Kagyu tradition, placed at the very end of a session. Fourthed from another tradition.
Supplications related to Dharma or benefiting beings produce such uncanny results that I had to admit my skepticism was no longer wise.

Re: No end to samsara?

Beings are so numerous they're beyond counting, like the grains of sand in a river. This refers not only to beings but to their afflictions, which they've spent an incredibly long time accumulating. To help one severely deluded being takes a very long time. To help many takes that much longer. Chenr...

Many years ago I said to a much more experienced Dharma student 'Western dharma is going to fail, it is already failing. It will never successfully transplant to the west' She replied. 'You are projecting, because you are having difficulty with your practice'. She was right. :good: Interest in othe...

Re: The Sacred Space

A picture I took at Byodo-in Temple in Hawaii. There's a very large Amida statue inside the open-air shrine room. I took some pictures of the statue but haven't yet developed the film.

Beautiful, peaceful place with temple cats sleeping peacefully among the wild chickens and birds.

Re: What does "my" imply?

It could mean the person sees the lama as the leader of their sangha.
It could also mean the person sees the lama as the living embodiment of buddhahood, their guide, inspiration, and connection to the blessings of a lineage.

It depends on one's school and practice.
