Re: Chinese Pureland Rebirth Stories In English

yannaunghtutwilliam, in my signature, you can find several legally free Pure Land books that I find inspiring. Buddhism of Wisdom and Faith includes rebirth stories and anecdotes, scattered throughout the teachings. www.purelanders.com has an entire section of testimonials in English . There are als...

Prayers for Dad

For something like 20+ years, my dad has been in medical limbo of some kind. He's in the hospital now. I have no idea how one man can spend so much time in the hospital, yet remain kind and happy. The moment he returns home, he gets right back to hiking, beach trips, DIYing his house to make it nice...

Re: Amitabha empowerment questions

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone. I've decided not to attend. No temple within three hours of me practices the associated sadhana that I could see. The host site was also unable to describe practice commitments with this empowerment. I know I would have questions and need encouragement. I don...

Re: What would you do?

Pray to Amitabha Buddha that he will come to bring me to his Pure Land, where I will be in the company of innumerable bodhisattva companions and receive Amitabha's teachings face to face. To go to his pure land, nothing more is required than this wish, a trust that he will help us, and thinking on h...

Amitabha empowerment questions

Ayang Rinpoche is giving a phowa course with Amitabha empowerment this October. The empowerment is open to the public. I'll only be able to attend that session. I'm hoping for input from the more experienced. My focus is Amitabha with sutra-based practices: buddha-remembrance, some visualization, th...

Re: Political discussions on Dharma Wheel

Mantrik and Simon, instead of simply disagreeing, criticisms and insinuations about others' Dharma practice being cowardly or incomplete? Misrepresenting our position and dismissing us as snowflakes doesn't show any desire to communicate. If this is how metadiscussion about politics goes, maybe you ...

Re: Political discussions on Dharma Wheel

For what it's worth, I now avoid all political discussions on DW after many bad experiences. I saw enough tempers flaring, name-calling, and so on to come to the same conclusion as kalden yungdrung. Whatever the intentions of the posters, what I saw didn't often look like engaged Buddhism or bringin...

Re: Is Mind Fundamental?

Matt, I'm not sure I understand what your message is to me. Am I fundamentalist, not practicing true Dharma, shying away from questions, trying to BS? If not, why raise those criticisms in a reply to me? It seems very personal. My point was that your posts to me look like you're saying it's impossib...

Re: Is Mind Fundamental?

Matt, either you have faith in the Buddha and teachers or you don't. To be a Buddhist yet question the validity of the Buddha's perception by suggesting it's impossible to cut through illusory perceptions and attain omniscience, that seems counterproductive to me. Apologies if I've misunderstood you...

Fly whisk, great! Thanks, I didn't know the term.

The garden sounds beautiful! My yard was a big swath of grass and the backyard a bunch of ivy and shotweed. Been slowly transforming it for years :)

Re: Dealing with ant infestation

Is there a type of soft brush I could find for sweeping up ants? We regularly have ants in this old house. They come in numbers that ignoring them isn't a possibility since they soon find our pantry. Maybe if I can sweep them up, they'll lose the trail. Cucumber water, cinnamon etc. didn't seem too ...

Re: Our Karma or theirs?

No wonder I was confused if you meant the opposite of what the words said. A downside in written communication. remember one of the 1st expedient lessons I've got from a Zen teacher who said; what happens to you is not you karma but the way you react to it is your karma.  You're confusion might be ...

what happens to you is not your karma but the way you react to it is your karma. This seems to run counter to the teachings on realms, doesn't it? Hi, "not your karma" does not mean not your karma. Re: Gratitude

DR, have you seen the Amida-ji blog ? He has many clear writings on Shin and faith, such as here and here . If you have the time, I also recommend reading the Honen threads on this forum as he explains Pure Land faith and practice in terms other than shinjin if you currently find that teaching diffi...

Re: Gratitude

I too sometimes think those kinds of things. I think it's a part of the process for Pure Land Buddhists, especially later converts like us. Just keep Amitabha in mind. If nembutsu hurts, then look at a picture of Amitabha or bow to the west, with all your imperfections. Lots of ways to "be mindful o...

Re: Gratitude

Who said anything about self-power?
But with Other Power it means Other Power, there is nothing from our side that will change that.
True, but we still must make the connection, grasping the hand that Amida extends to us so to speak. This is karma.

Re: Gratitude

Transmission isn't a feature of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, which I believe doublerepukken follows. Hey all, I am having trouble feeling gratitude, it's really a life long problem. My parents used to chastise me for being ungrateful, I think it's a part of my extreme selfishness. As per master Shin...

Moosewood cookbook Thug kitchen series. I like the 101 book a lot, it's a crash course in vegan cooking seitan (wheat gluten meat substitute you can make at home that is very versatile and filling, I can share my recipe if interested) Any grain + bean/lentil + protein + veggie = instant dinner E.g. ...
