Re: Agency

Regarding fiery debate, not as much as you might think. On the internet, maybe. That's what I've noticed in my few years anyway

Re: Signing Off

This thread is an occasion to praise good qualities and contributions. If not, then to offer the victory to others, to drive all blames into oneself, makes the occasion fruitful as well.

Re: How many Amida Buddhas there are?

I have a picture of Amida on my desk. There are countless others like it in the world. And they all only exist, with the details they have, because Shakyamuni taught this world about Amida. The idea of emanations can be tricky to get your mind around, but it's essentially a way buddhas bring the Dha...

Re: Who was the author (or authors) of the Pure Land Sutras?

Nembutsu is a name for Amida, like Paulo is for you, and "house" for all the parts that make a house. That seems to be how we think, a name that points to something else. In this case, a buddha within a teaching who has vowed and accomplished specific things to help us  Nembutsu benefited me ...

Re: Who was the author (or authors) of the Pure Land Sutras?

An addendum to the above, with more information. From shinranworks.com, which is a free compendium of Shinran's writings, there are these lovely stanzas: Fifteen Hymns 96 Amida Tathagata came forth and guided beings, Teaching the “Chapter on Life-span” In the Sutra of Golden Splendor In order to end...

Re: Who was the author (or authors) of the Pure Land Sutras?

For example, those listed in the 48 Vows of the Larger Sutra, all made to benefit beings. Several, such as the 33rd, apply not only to the residents of Sukhavati: Vow 33 : If, when I attain Buddhahood, sentient beings in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarters who have be...

Re: Who was the author (or authors) of the Pure Land Sutras?

And / or : how is the authoritative aspect of these Sutras based/established ? At first for us, through taking the Sutras at their word as words of the Buddha. Later, experience with the positive results of even thinking of Sukhavati and Amida becomes the authority. I think it's this way no matter ...

Re: Agency

Conventionally/Relatively speaking: the skandha. Except that they are not you. You just think they are you. ;) If one claims the skandhas are agents, which one is the agent? I think Grig was referring to how ordinary people perceive some or all of the skandhas as the source of agency. Some will dis...

Re: Question on using multiple mantras

Does anyone here have familiarity with the Cundi dharani? There is of course this short sutra.

Not all dharanis/mantras are the same in how they're used or said to work.

Awakening the Luminous Mind has really helped me find what stillness, silence, and spaciousness mean in this particular life I live. It's nice to hear things explained from a different angle anyway!

Re: Question on using multiple mantras

Specializing in one can make it easier for the mantra to become a source of refuge in difficulty. And there will be difficulty in this world. Finding that the mantra actually brings benefit when you need it helps build faith. Other mantras and practices can support the main mantra or have specific u...

As a sidenote, Pure Land practice in China didn't split off into its own school like it did in Japan. I posted these resources on your Reddit thread, but they're worth sharing here as well: * Pure Land Zen, Zen Pure Land * Pure Land Teachings of Master Chu-hung * Taming the Monkey Mind * Dialogues w...

Re: How do we respond to people who discredit Nichiren Buddhism?

:good: :good: for both above. Faith/confidence is the foundation that we rely upon to help ourselves and to save all beings from suffering. Such a compassionate aspiration has nothing to do with opinions or historical guesswork. Either we apply the teaching and see the fruits in our own lives, or we...
