Re: Memory - improvement techniques

Greetings! I learned the BDK translation. Here's a copy online. The sutra starts on p. 115 of the PDF. For the buddha names, I used the English translations on p. 127.

Re: Dealing With Demons

Some further reading from a Pure Land perspective: * Purelanders.com: If you encounter a ghost * Purelanders.com: Ghostly disturbances * Buddhism of Wisdom and Faith: Discussion on Demonic Realms (section 51, farther down the page). This is specifically about demons and not hungry ghosts. I also fou...

Re: Dealing With Demons

To say that demonic entities only exist in the mind is meaningless. It is true to the extent that all beings, events and phenomena have no independent existence. But as HHDL quoted when asked if the Dharmapalas exist 'they are as real as you are'. No more, but no less real. :good: Don't underestima...

Her books were some of the first I read when exploring Buddhism. She came across as a very warm, patient lady. Thanks for sharing this interview which illustrates exactly that

Re: DIY prayer wheel

That's good to know, thank you! I immediately ran into the problem that Altoids sours seem to be discontinued. I found one can on Amazon for $400 :rolling: I found some gold tins online that should work. Ignore the prototypes I was considering in the pictures :) So far, I've followed the directions ...

Re: Dealing With Demons

This chapter from Buddhism of Wisdom and Faith discusses demonic obstacles, both "internal" and "external" from a Vietnamese Pure Land perspective. Something I've always admired about Buddhism is how it treats ghosts. Rather than casting them into the sea, or trying to cause further fear or harm, a...

Re: feeling happy

We have been firmly fettered by the enemy of worldly passions such as greed and anger and have transmigrated in the cage of the delusive three realms. Upon seeing this, Amida Buddha, with deep sympathy like a compassionate mother, cuts our ties of transmigration with the sharp sword of his name, se...

The human realm is characterized by desire, not really by a form aggregate similar to primates, no?

Re: How do I know I'm doing things right?

There is so much confusion here. TongLen means "taking and sending." It is part of the Mahayana, really, part of the transmission of "LoJong" or "Mind Training." It can be incorporated into any Deity yoga practice, though.....if you have empowerment and transmission, you simply perform taking and s...

Re: How do I know I'm doing things right?

Bokar Rinpoche said in "Chenrezig: Lord of Love" something like, if you grow in compassion and love, your practice is progressing. Study, remember, cultivate bodhicitta as your basis in everything you think, say, and do. With such a foundation, any practice will bear fruit.

Re: DIY prayer wheel

Excellent info from FPMT, thank you! I plan on filling mine with nembutsu and a copy of the Amitabha Sutra. If anyone knows, FPMT recommends wrapping the “Tree of Life” mantra around the central staff. The homemade prayer wheel from the video doesn't have a central shaft inside the wheel. Would it b...

Re: Memory - improvement techniques

I'm the same way. Then I memorized the Amitabha Sutra which can be recited in 15-20 minutes. First I learned the story so I knew what came next generally. Then I tried to anticipate words and entire sentences while reading with a ruler angled to reveal only a few words at a time. The lists of buddha...

Sounds like I have a project :)

Is there any special mantra or ceremony to consecrate a home-made prayer wheel?
Specifically that non-Vajrayana practitioners can do?

Re: Worry and incarnational faith

Chinese Pure Land practice has traditionally conducted daily repentance and has held repentance ceremonies on special days. So it's literally a different kind of Pure Land. Incidentally, such repentance is part & parcel of the teachings of ShanTao and Honen. Just look at the Ojoraisan , and see Sha...

Prayers for Dad

For something like 20+ years, my dad has been in medical limbo of some kind. He's in the hospital now. I have no idea how one man can spend so much time in the hospital, yet remain kind and happy. The moment he returns home, he gets right back to hiking, beach trips, DIYing his house to make it nice...
