Re: Buddha-recitation samadhi, hearing recitation sound, auditory hallucination

Bumping this old thread for some discussion. Information on the buddha-recitation samadhi is hard to come by. Can anyone provide some reading or resources? I've seen buddha-remembrance practitioners from Jodoshu, Chinese, and Vietnamese all describe something like above, an experience of hearing Ami...

Re: Pure land transcending the triple realm?

Yes, animal, preta, hell realms are explicitly absent. Not to give you too much reading to do, but Amitabha's 48 Vows from the Larger Sutra establish the characteristics of his Pure Land. If you compare the qualities of Sukhavati with the qualities of the six realms individually, I think it makes it...

Re: Pure land transcending the triple realm?

:good: ... none of the three evil realms exist in that buddha-land. Even the names of the three evil realms do not exist there, how much less the realms themselves. ... Again, Shariputra, all sentient beings born in the Land of Utmost Bliss dwell in the state of non-retrogression. Many of them are i...

... (6) With palms pressed together, I beseech you Triumphant who would pass beyond sorrow: I beg you, remain for countless eons so as not to leave in their blindness these wandering beings. Buddhas know better than any of us here the mistaken imputation of "sentient being". Yet they seek them out ...

Re: The Wanderer

Possession is Relative, for in Ultimate there is no Arising and Ceasing. So, possessing the 10 paramitas would refer to cultivating and practice, which is Relative, because of the Grasping. If there is no Arising and Ceasing, there would be no Cultivating and practice, for there is No Grasping. No ...

Re: Advantage and disadvantage of ego and egolessness

Advantage and disadvantage are among the Eight Worldly Concerns . That means they do not lead to lasting happiness for yourself or for others. To benefit others, you need bodhicitta. And the beginning of bodhicitta is the precepts. If you uphold the precepts and keep a regular, simple meditation or ...

Re: What causes a Bodhisattva to regress?

It means being reborn in the lower realms and falling away from the Dharma, like a rich person who becomes destitute.

10. For the sake of accomplishing the welfare of all sentient beings, I freely give up my body, enjoyments, and all my virtues of the three times. 11. Surrendering everything is nirvana, and my mind seeks nirvana. If I must surrender everything, it is better that I give it to sentient beings. -- Gu...

Re: Eight Mahayana Precepts

From the document kirtu just shared: If I have bodhichitta, I can obtain the three great purposes and I can then cause numberless hell beings, preta beings, animal beings, human beings, suras, and asuras and all sentient beings to achieve the three great purposes. I can cause them to achieve enlight...

Re: Is Dharma practice a struggle for you?

We also don't have to accomplish this alone. Even if we can't yet benefit directly from a teacher or sangha, such as in my case, the buddhas and bodhisattvas have unobstructed vision, as Shantideva says. They see and hear the lonely practitioner with heavy defilements who calls out, "Compassionate O...

Daily life practices are vital for that reason. Being a householder frankly sucks in a lot of ways. Mantras have been a lifeline.

The chapter on patience from the Bodhisattvacharyāvatāra has been eye opening for me regarding anger. I can post some excerpts if you don't have access to a copy.
