Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

I’m a Nichiren Shu practitioner. Others have answered more in-depth with what are basically the Nichiren Shu understanding of the precepts. They’re there inasmuch as they are in Nichiren Buddhism, generally. But they’re not focused on for the reasons others have stated. One’s behavior naturally conf...

Re: Etsy Gohonzon store: what do y’all think?

Object to what? Just the fact that he sells them? Is he just selling them to anyone who wants one? I'm not sure I care for that, if that's the case, but there isn't much anyone can do about it. Not all of what is on his site would be suitable honzons for a Nichiren practitioner, but that's neither h...

Re: How important is forgiveness?

Forgiveness means that there’s now a blank slate as far as whatever the offending behavior was. It’s like forgiving a debt. You don’t owe the money anymore. Are you referring to the Karmic debt incurred by the offenders actions? No, I'm just talking in terms of personal relationships. If I forgive ...

Re: How important is forgiveness?

Do we have a common definition of "forgiveness" that we are working with? I don't think my question - what does it mean to forgive - has been answered. Mine is different from what has become the common definition, which seems to be “just let it go.” IMO, forgiveness requires a genuine apology and a...

Too bad there's not even a Nichiren Shu temple in my state.
I don’t know where you are, but several Nichiren Shu ministers will work with you remotely, if you’re interested. I’m about 3 hours from my temple, which isn’t terribly far, but I’m not able to visit often.

Re: Would this be acceptable to use in place of a Gohonzon?

If you’re “unaffiliated,” I guess it would be okay, but a Nichiren Shu priest would issue a new person a “temporary” mandala (I never had one of those, so I’m not sure what they look like exactly) until your jukai and then they’d give you a Shutei Mandala Gohonzon.

Re: Interesting Read

The divide is definitely a thing, and I've also experienced the aloofness Rev. Myokei mentions, particularly at Zen Centers. Silent meditation was not initially what attracted me to Buddhism. I was drawn in by ritual and the promise that there was some part of me that was inherently good, and not fu...

Re: Nichiren's exclusivism

Yes, by exclusivism i meant that. What looks problematic to me was his harsh way to say that the others were wrong. What do you think ? That’s the part I don’t think we necessarily need to copy. Nichiren was reacting to very harsh circumstances. There were plagues, earthquakes, famines, attempted f...

Re: Nichiren's exclusivism

I assume what is meant is the idea that the Lotus Sutra is the only path to Buddhahood in the age of mappo, and more specifically, the practice formulated by Nichiren based on it. I dont think it’s circumstantial. Nichiren’s criticisms of certain sects of his time may have been circumstantial, and a...

Re: Let's Discuss - Is Nichiren Hombutsu?

Shakyamuni Buddha as revealed in the 16th chapter of the LS is regarded as the Original Buddha in all Nichiren traditions besides Nichiren Shoshu and SGI, as far as I know. I’m sure it’s explained in much greater depth in illaraza’s blog posts.

I dunno what the ABC stuff is, but I always use the book. Even after practicing for over 12 years, I have very little shindoku memorized. Sometimes you think you have something like that memorized when you really don’t.

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists pray for others?

Yes, of course, we pray for others. One of my teachers told me that you should always offer a prayer dedicating merit after a period of practice. In Nichiren Shu, we recite a prayer after chanting the Daimoku, dedicating merit to the Eternal Buddha, the Lotus Sutra, Nichiren Shonin, protective deiti...

Re: Why was Nichiren's issue with Zen Buddhism?

Nichiren lived some seven to eight centuries ago, and he was critiquing his contemporaries. Whether the objects of his critiques continue to the present in substantially the same form, I don't know. For sure, and I don’t think that can be overstated. In his writings he distinguished forms of Zen th...
