Re: Peeling the onion

I think the whole point of the onion analogy is that if you keep peeling the onion, layer after layer, suddenly you find you have nothing in your hand. The onion has no core.

Re: A small practice but a good one

I have enough problems seeing the Buddha within me, let alone inside others! Do you aspire to enlightenment? Look at the part of you that does. Have you ever felt compassion for the suffering of another? There sits the Buddha. Same pretty much applies to anyone who has ever tried to be a b...

Re: The Lounge: Dharma Wheel Gold

Well isn't this odd. I've devoted way more of my time here to humour than I should, but I didn't make the list. Maybe because a lot of it was Lolcat memes. Just ask Greg, he will testify that most of my many posts here are funny, if not outright laughable... BTW I think you missed an important sourc...

A small practice but a good one

I have for some years been in the habit of ending each social encounter by saying "Namaste". I was told that it essentially is an acknowledgement of the Buddha within the person you have been talking to. That may or may not be accurate, but hey if you want accuracy you can always ask Malcolm. Now it...

Re: Tongue touching palate in Dzogchen?

I have always followed the practice of placing the tip of the tongue at the place where the gums and front teeth meet. I was originally told that this helps to get the winds flowing the right way, but I really don't know about that. What i have noticed it that it cuts down on mouth breathing, helps ...

I have this silly idea, but I'm not QUITE sure it's silly.

If you are serious about calling the guru from afar, wouldn't it be correct to start with directory assistance?

Certificate problem

According to Firefox this site's security certificate has expired. I have to do quite the run around, bypassing security functions, to get here, It's been this way for at least a week now.

Re: For the science and religion crowd

This was a great discussion before it got off track. So sad I missed it. The article quoted in the first post was right on the money, I think. Although I have been accused of being a hard core scientific absolutist, I have always been very much aware that there seem to be some subjects that just don...

Re: The Sacred Tattoos of Thailand

I see this striking resemblance to some of the wilder pentecostal services I've seen. I suppose this kind of thing has been going on since the imes of the Greek oracles. It was probably ancient even then.

Is idiot compassion a thing?

This is a topic of ongoing debate be me and a friend. The specific case keeps coming up of a beggar asking for ten dollars. The beggar is a known, active drug user and is known to have begged money for other purposes, such as food or overnight shelter, then spent it on drugs. My friend says it's not...

Re: The paradox of lack of cognitive dissonance

No he did not. He chose to have Right View. It is just that Right View is not contained within the four extremes. Your view flirts dangerously with nihilism. I recommend you go read Chandrakirti (since you are so enamored of him) Madhayamakavatara, especially the section on Wisdom, Chapter 6 "Clear...

Nah I'm pretty sure that one IS an eating disorder. Some people (like me) get very sick very fast on such diets.

Nagarjuna chose to have no views. I will follow his example.
For a guy with no views, he sure wrote a lot of books.

Yup there was the one guy whose work often seemed more like commercial illustration than actual art.... was that Lauren whatsisname?

At any rate I think The Jack Pine shows a nice sense of depth. That's Tommy Thompson, right?.

Re: What is Art ?

Briefly looked at the group of 7... they are definitely influenced by the impressionists, and I would not be surprised if they were also influenced by ukiyo-e. The flatness of the paintings definitely echoes the woodblock prints. Well there would at least be a Japanese influence through the classic...

That statue looks like a very fine piece of craftsmanship, but the photo seems to have been shopped. What is that blue thing?

That may be the case, but it doesn't mean theories about those deceptions can't work and be extremely useful. Well, see: Do not touch the hot plate. It can be extremely useful to follow this advice. Nevertheless it is based on deception. Well why not just say, the hotplate is a deception, my hand i...

Re: Veganism is an Eating Disorder

Ok, so which does a Buddhist give priority to, the suffering of worms and bugs or the suffering of people? Which is more deserving of our attention and concern?
