The essence of this step is to feel all bodies while breathing in and breathing out. We ...

Re: Vajrayana and PTSD
When I was first introduced to Buddhism it was categorized as a philosophy. People might be more willing to listen if you say you're offering a way of life. People can be turned off by the idea of religion because of ongoing hypocrisy. Eckart Tolle has a way of teaching that is very gentle... Marcus...

Within the rite of empowerment itself, yes.
Otherwise how can we understand something that transcends the mind?
I reserve further comment since we are getting off base here as the last poster pointed out.
My apologies to the original poster.

Re: Mahāmudrā & Dzogchen
Well that's true but the tantras are teachings for those on the path (after realization). There is outer tantra (Ngondro), but it should be taught by a lama when we are closer to the path. And the meaning (or view) of prajna is different after realization. The true meaning of prajna won't be realize...

Re: Mahāmudrā & Dzogchen
I was writing in terms of the 4 (or sometimes 5) yogas of Mahamudra. We weren't discussing sutra. Whether it's Mahamudra or Dzogchen the path is the same after realization. The 4 yogas of Mahamudra encompass the path before and after realization. I couldn't agree more with respect to intellectual le...

Re: Mahāmudrā & Dzogchen
There is only one path, and it must be "pointed out" to us.
Then we will understand what we cannot understand intellectually and was not meant to be understood intellectually.

Well you guys are very lucky to live near teachers like that.

Re: "Do not befriend the foolish"
Funny story about the nuances of translation - I have never forgotten this story from the biography I read in my teens of the Trapp Family Singers. They arrived in America with very little knowledge of English, and set about reading various books to sharpen their skills. Idioms, colloquialisms, etc...

Re: "Do not befriend the foolish"
One problem is the dictionary we use to translate words. Different dictionaries will have different words for a tibetan word. Maybe a word that defines the meaning was not chosen properly. We translate meaning, not words! So what happens when a translator attempts to translate tantra when he doesn'...

Hi billzoe,
I think the difference in the tantras are the level of realization.
Realizations on the path are Form Body 'achievements'.
If you aren't on the path I wouldn't try to figure it out...too much distraction for my meditation.

Re: Forgiveness?
Forgiveness sort of assumes the other party is at fault. That may not be so. If I feel the need to forgive someone I'll always ask myself what I could have done to help precipitate the event? Even if the other party is to blame I'll ask myself what I could have done to prevent the event. This would ...

Re: Celibacy
Engaging in SIE is socially acceptable. Perfectly normal. And if it's socially acceptable then what could be wrong with it? Several weeks ago while at work this subject came up, and it was agreed that we are human and it is a biological need...it was impossible for anyone to avoid doing it. I asked ...

Re: Keith Dowman's translations
Good points. Generally speaking there's a concern were translations may unintentionally convey (a) the wrong point. This could be on a very small scale...just one passage. A student (or scholar) picks up the wrong point and it causes harm to others however large or small. And it keeps getting past o...

Each student has his own capacity to accept teaching.
A blanket answer for all would negate the wisdom of the teacher.

Re: Thamal gyi shepa vs. baby rigpa vs. rigpa (etc.)
The terms we are using here are qualities of the 'Ultimate Sphere' (Rigpa, karma traces, and the wisdoms of Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya). The 4 Visions of Dzogchen indicate the level of realization of Rigpa on the Path. The goal being full realization of Rigpa, the fully enlightened st...

Re: Keith Dowman's translations
Because there are no direct equivalents to many tibetan words, good translators will offer the tibetan and sometimes sanskrit word with the text. The book, 'The Practice of Dzogchen' is a precious and sacred translation from the Tibetan. My favorite book. Talbott is the editor, but it is so clear an...

Re: Dzogchen practiced on different solar systems?
I heard that Chogyal Namkhai Norbu has stated that Dzogchen is practiced on different solar systems. How would a person know such a thing? Is it even possible to be able to have such information,i find this statement puzzling and incredible at the same time. :anjali: Master Norbu may be refering to ...
