That's the one from the Sutras, which is also a good simile.
Do you know which Sūtra it’s from? Obviously I don’t since I mis-attributed it.
It's in the Samyutta Nikaya 5.554 of the Pali Canon. It might also be in the Agamas equivalent. And it's also in the Milindapanha.

Re: theseus and anātman

The version of the thought experiment was a little different. Instead of a boat it was a chariot. And instead of the parts being bad and discarded, they were saved and as each part was removed from the first chariot it was added to the pile of parts and a second chariot was built. So then the quest...

theseus and anātman

Lately we've had quite a few topics and posts on anatta, nibbana (nirvana), and rebirth over at DWT and also on existence here at DWM, so I thought I'd add my favorite simile to the pile. Plutarch was a Greek philosopher who lived in the first century CE and came up with a great thought experiment: ...

Re: Dharma Ending Age

For some reason the Search function here & at Dhamma Wheel does not work for Topics like it used to. After a few minutes I gave up. I thought there was another thread on this subject and in 2012 there was. So it reminded me of this Mahayana sutra on the subject: http://www.sutrasmantras.info/sutra1...

Re: Words...

I know you are saying something else as well, but it is not very clear for the most part, and seems like this is what you are saying. I provided both quotes, the original and an updated version. I didn't make a value judgment of which is better, just thought of those sayings since they are connecte...

Re: Words...

19th century children's saying:

Sticks and stones may break my bones
But names will never harm me.

late 20th century updated version:

Sticks and stones may break my bones but will heal, while words cause permanent damage.

Re: Dharma Ending Age

here is one regarding women: If, Ananda, women had not obtained the going forth, the holy life would have lasted long, the true teaching would have endured for a thousand years. But, Ananda, since women have gone forth, the holy life now would not last, the true Dharma would endure only for 500 yea...

Re: Balanced vegetarian diet

" What do you even eat? " is a common phrase you'll hear from omnivores. As if they only eat meat. I don't know anyone who only eats meat (pure carnivores are lions, not humans). Many people don't realize how much of their food is already vegetarian (I don't mean you, I mean those who use that phras...

Re: Announcement about the Closing of Sweeping Zen

After looking at his youtube channel, I had to look up the terms gangstalking and TIs (targeted individuals):

Shocking and sad.

Re: Who are your favourite ancient non-Buddhist philosophers?

Plato, Immanuel Kant, Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Peter Singer

I don't agree with all of their ideas, though.

edit: although none of them would be considered "ancient" except perhaps for Plato.

In that case, I'd have to add Laozi (also spelled Lao Tzu)

Which traditions revere vegetarianism the most?

Which traditions would you say revere vegetarianism the most? Note this is not to place a value-judgment as being good to bad, superior to inferior, just a curious question. By revering I mean either requiring, recommending, mandating for the monks and nuns (and / or lay people), to be vegetarian as...

Re: Kamala Devi Harris

Watched some of Harris' Iowa town hall on CNN last night. One thing that bothers me is that CNN gave Harris a platform, but AFAIK, has not extended the same opportunity to any of the other candidates. This raises serious questions about how that decision was made and makes one wonder at the rigging...
