Re: Has medicalization gone too far?

If we can't see through this, there really is no hope: an insidious attempt to legitimate both science and spirituality placing them hand-in-hand, part of society's self-deluded urge to continually hoist psychology as truth to the highest altar. There is no scientific basis for the spiritual - it ca...

Re: The harms of Masturbation and Porn

Its interesting that in these times of the neo conservatives proliferating and draconian clampdowns, persecution of whistle blowers ...the powers that be can do nothing about porn? Obviously they want it to flourish, to diminish the reasonable man to nothing but a voyeur of flesh, to be a weakling, ...

Re: Towards a resolution in Israel and Palestine

I really don't see a solution to the endless conflict. The eyes of the world are glued on the area. There are many serious problems around the world but not that much attention is given to conflicts in Syria, Africa and countries bordering Russia. Where was the world when the war in Sri Lanka went o...

Re: Dharma should not have a price on it

Jesse, The Buddha lived in the real world. Let's call a spade a spade. We all have to look at the situation clearly and stop making excuses.

Dharma should not have a price on it

"The Buddha gave the Dhamma freely to all. He often underwent difficulties and inconveniences and on occasions even risked his life, in order to teach the Dhamma to others (Ud.78). The monk Punna was prepared to teach the Dhamma in a district where the people were known for their violence and w...

Re: Interview with the Arahat

The arhat conversation with Buddha at the gas pump was interesting, at times idealistic, even good fun but lots and lots of chatter.
I'd much rather listen to Ajahn Sumedho.

Re: The cost of our cheap clothing

The poor definitely suffer but we in the west are impacted as well as most of the clothing is impregnated with formaldehyde, its a no win situation. You buy new clothing but have to wash it thoroughly before wearing because of the cancer causing chemicals in the fabric.

The pet craze

I'm rather fond of both dogs and cats and love watching birds and parrots. Lately though i think the pet craze, especially when it comes to dogs has reached a whole new level. Outside any restaurant or cafe there are numerous dogs sitting tethered or enjoying the sun with masters in tow drinking cof...

Re: Sexual and physical abuse in religious institutions

Dear JKhedrup, The beautiful old saying 'as you are so is the world' is so apt here. If people see most monks and religious institutions as sinister places, if they see no goodness.... well let them have their half baked ideas. Its really not worthy of a serious response.

Re: Celibacy

Rory, You pointing out which path is possibly right for me is interesting to say the least. Most practitioners have a devotional side and a discriminating side. Without a devotional pull the practice becomes arid and can falter.

Re: Celibacy

Indrajala, I'm not that interested in intellectual work or some boffins interpretation. Who cares how clever or cerebral he is? I'd much rather listen to a monk or nun I respect and hear of their own direct experience, sit quietly and bask in their presence. Be still, I know its hard but its not roc...

Re: Celibacy

I've always been drawn to monks and nuns in the east or the west and have found despite renunciation their humour infectious, their outlook on life insightful, compassionate; hence the amount of people who gather around them happy to sit quietly or eager to hear them speak.

Re: Celibacy

Narendra Modi the new Prime Minister of India is an interesting man, The 63-year-old is celibate, has no children that we know of, and seems ascetic and honest. He has had no powerful connections or relatives looking out for him. He's from a small town and was once a tea seller (Chai wallah) has not...

Re: Reaching the unconscious mind

Talking about the conscious or the unconscious mind matters little as the belief that I am 'in here' and the world is 'out there' is a subjective truth and many mere novices, let alone so called boffins, experts and teachers simply cannot get passed it.

Re: Celibacy

"Just as a fully liberated person will have thoughts, feel thirst etc" The way I see it...thoughts and thirst will be there but it won't be my thoughts or my thirst or any sort of emotional personal narrative. A calm wisdom will prevail.
