Re: Reasonable things to tattoo

The amount of money that tattoo cost could have fed a hundred monks for a year Depends on what country you live in... 45 hrs of tattooing cost me the equivalent of about 200USD. I suspect maybe this is an error and you meant 4-5 hrs... unless you got one helluva deal. I had a former thangka artist ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

Faith as it said in Christianity results in heaven but also the virtues and their results as spoken in the dharma. Its a religion designed to avoid the hells so on that merit alone I think it has its own relative value. Wrong View whether it be Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, voodoo etc produces wrong...

Re: Reasonable things to tattoo

Ogyen Tattoos.jpg Nothing secret here, but it is my core practice (in case I have an accident and get amnesia). 7 line prayer, 100 syllable vajrasattva mantra, song of vajra and some symbolized items in my red seals - one is a stylized yabyum to NOT depict actual union, which is inappropriate, but ...

Re: Dialectical Monism / Emptiness

Glancing at the article, I think it’s a neologism of recent invention. I think Madhyamika is indeed inherently dialectical but I don’t think ‘monistic’ is a good descriptor. I don’t think that Wikipedia article is worth the electrons it’s printed on. Wikipedia articles can be changed by any contrib...

Re: Two months of writing.

Just a note; sorry for the depressing poems. I'm just writing to vent; and I hope someone out there can relate to the content. Otherwise I am OK. Just dealing with things as they come nowdays.. I'm a poetry geek. I read a lot because it opens a channel in which I can process things that aren't made...

Re: Do we loose our identity when we die?

so, in both cases, do we loose our identity? Yes. Identity is a construct that arises out of the aggregates and the conditioning in the experience of living life that any individual has. Many parts of it change within the course of a lifetime, others remain more fixed (like the hardwiring of the ph...

Re: DNA TESTS

Interesting article in today's NYT https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/27/health/dna-privacy-golden-state-killer-genealogy.html I thought the police did a brilliant job. DNA evidence can exonerate people as well as convict them. Personally, I think the good outweighs the risks. And in the article it se...

Re: DNA TESTS

It's really important to find a place where you feel at home. Sometimes our ancestry contributes, and sometimes I wonder how much past lives help. I've also wondered this because I've made the world my home... I've yet to find a specific place that clicks like some people talk about finding their m...

Re: DNA TESTS

In reality of course, all of our distant ancestors were black. Shakyamuni broke off some wicked beats. Omniscient and all. I haven't done the testing myself, but a family member has, so based on what I was told, our Indian family is shockingly NOT "the Indian we thought it was," but a mix of Ladakh...

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

The answer to the question in the OP is given in the first two verses of the Dharmapada. Verse 1. Suffering Follows The Evil-Doer Mind precedes all knowables, mind's their chief, mind-made are they. If with a corrupted mind one should either speak or act dukkha follows caused by that, as does the w...

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

What costs 500 USD? The Gelong Lodrö Sangpo version (4 volumes) costs 150 USD in total. The paperback of Pruden's version is 50 x 4 = 200 USD, and the hardcover of that one is out of stock so it's an expensive third-party store price. Get either the Gelong Lodrö Sangpo version, or the paperback of ...

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

Vasana asked about the Abhidharmakosha earlier, and I posted this - it includes Gelong Lodrö Sangpo's version (which is also the version I own, it's nice): 1. 4 volume set, based on Poussin's French translation, updated/annotated English translation by Gelong Lodrö Sangpo. This is also the latest p...

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

How do you know you're not just making things worse thinking you're making things better (good intentions and all that jazz)??? You don't. You do your best. You learn the "rules" of ethical conduct, you practise meditation, you act, and then you take your chances. Intentions matter, so if you are d...

Re: How do you know you're not just making karma worse??

We talk about karma in principle, and I am fixed (determined) on understanding it in its correct view. But not to just understand and talk about it. I want this to be done already. I'm fed up with being ignorant. Since you read French, you can get Valle-Poussin's original translation of the Abhidha...
