Re: Bliss in Zen (sukha)

It is much as if I were to hand similar tomatoes and potatoes, cream, salt and pepper and other spices to a find French chef and to my mother, asking them to cook their "tomato soup". While both surely would produce a soup of tomatoes, and the French chef's way would undoubtedly be delicious, only ...

It is very simple. Chan/Zen is those traditions that lay claim to being heirs and preservers of the teachings of Bodhidharma and his followers. We dont need a metadiscussion to understand this much.
I believe you are now engaging in meta-discussion.

Re: Intellectualization

How can you expect keeping Zen in the Zen forum if you don't specify what Zen is? Well, ya know, they say that everything is Zen, so theoretically one can talk here about baseball, politics, leaky sink fixing. Jesus and the Beverly Hills Housewives ... all "Zen". But it probably means (with a few g...

Re: Intellectualization

Let's review. This thread emerged when Jundo said something (one particular person--remember, we all speak for ourselves here only) that seemed confusing. So I asked a question about it. To the best of my knowledge, that question has never been answered at all. Hi DGA. Gee, all I have been doing fo...

Sorry, as I jump here in between. Isn't it so that by intellectualizing not the words are a problem, not phenomena are the problem, but the clinging mind? Not-intellectualizing is turning the gaze within, to see how this is and discover silent peace/nothing to grasp. Talk can be then as well, thoug...

Re: Intellectualization

Dear All, I wish to apologize to everyone if the method (and non-method) to my madness is not apparent to all here. Let me try to explain in another way. If a fellow comes to me and seeks to explain Zen with some imitative Zen-koan like non-sequitor, but there does not seem to be any real understand...

Re: Intellectualization

Again we come to an interesting question though, which might actually be the heart of the thread: you seem to be saying that Zen is about certain specific, prescriptive uses of words and language while at the same time affirming that Zen is beyond the petty need of language. Is there some reason th...

Re: Intellectualization

The caveat I'd add is that sometimes it's not "just a style"--you know? If you refer to not getting stuck with words, that's not a unique concept of Zen. It's been around since the Nikayas. I don't mean to get stuck in semantics myself, but I mean such a radical rejection of our usual way or seeing...

Re: Intellectualization

What I am taking issue with (not scoffing) is *your* misappropriation of "Zen style" to not answer questions. Sometimes one can explain and link to explanations by others and all manner of information to show what one is doing, and folks only hear and see what they wish. You think I am dodging. So,...

Re: Intellectualization

In Zen, as I understand it,(based on very little exposure,) such sorts of analysis, intellectual reasoning, conceptual elaboration, are beside the point at best, and antithetical to the Zen path at an extreme. The largest amount of canonical works by a specific school of Buddhism in East Asia is by...

Re: Intellectualization

Nope I don't miss the point, there are plenty of Zen teachers who could actually answer some of these questions (or at least would out of kindness) without this sort of facile game. Oh boy! Then you had better ask them. However, sometimes kindness is not recognized. Who are you? A clue: When Priest...

Re: Intellectualization

In this particular time and place, it appears I'm the Marvelous Magical Manifestation of the guy you won't answer because you want to save face and win the "Zen guy" DW medal. Who are you? Ah, you seem to miss the point. Try again. There is no rush. Who are you? This is the place of intellectualiza...

Re: Intellectualization

Naw, it's another dodge. IN the right context, you are right, it is the most profound question. In this one, it is just you messing around because you don't want to engage, but DO want to win. There is no winning or losing, and this can't be dodged. What is the place of intellectualization in Zen: ...

Re: Intellectualization

Folks may be annoyed by or not understand such a response, but if you think about it (or better, don't think or think-non-thinking about it), it is the most crystal clear response possible. It's a basic meditation instruction in pretty much every Buddhist system, and something that I'll bet every s...

Re: Intellectualization

[ Debate and discussion has been part of Buddhism since its very beginning, in fact, it's quite the celebrated part of Buddhism. Now, maybe these things aren't for everybody. And that's fair. But it's certainly strange to complain about discussion happening on a discussion forum... Hi Norwegian, Yo...

Re: Intellectualization

I believe that the whole tone and structure of this thread is so far off from any approach to Zen Practice I know, that I do not know how to approach the questions. One would be thrown out of the Dokusan room, directed back to the sitting place. Such discussions belong in the coffee shop, not in Zen...

Re: Intellectualization

Someone who practices Zen and does not feel inclined to dissect it. That's fine in the beginning since Zen's gate is experiential rather than intellectual. But if one trains with correct motivation - that is, in accordance with vows to help others - then how could there ultimately be any limitation...
