Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

So anyone capable of translating this? From my rudimentary Tibetan I can see that Ogyen Trinley is referred to as Gyalwa Karmapa and Thaye Dorje is not in the document. The signatures certainly resemble those on the earlier press release but that is easy to fake. Like the earlier press releases head...

Post it if you can Cone. Would be interested to see it. I'm sure we'll get it translated.

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I think for many of us that have faith in the Karma Kamtsang for example, there are many great incarnations of Tai Situ. Most that I have spoken to have little faith in the current one, to be generous. One thing your statement is definitely not, is generous. But it is exactly that quality we'll all...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Maybe a little premature. We don't know how or even if this will eventually play out. There may be one, two or no Karmapas for all we know. Talking of multiple Karmapas, anyone have any news how Dawa Sangpo is taking the latest developments? Maybe a lot premature. No one has said anythin...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Maybe a lot premature. No one has said anything about there being more than one Karmapa, though many of those rejoicing, and those wringing their hands, have assumed this meeting allows for two (or more) Karmapas. I think that's an incorrect inference. I also saw something on FB about Thaye Dorje r...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

So.... should we be registering karmapas.org, or not yet? Maybe a little premature. We don't know how or even if this will eventually play out. There may be one, two or no Karmapas for all we know. Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

AFAIK the DWB has no official statement to it. DWB buddhist groups I follow on FB didn't even share the news. Soo I am very interested in it. After all Ole kinda built his reputation around the whole two karmapas situation. But I do believe (or hope) that his devotion towards Karmapa is bigger than...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Wouldn't that knock the whole tulku thing on the head? If being the Karmapa is just a role or post - like being CEO of Karma Kagyu Inc. I was just wildly speculating. But you know, to my mind, getting rid of the whole Tulku thing would be no bad thing. And to answer Simon, interesting question abou...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

If the real problem is who gets to be Karmapa, then perhaps a "thinking- out-of-the-box" solution may be to retire the institution itself - just as the Dalai Lama has considered ending his role. Who knows? Another interesting alternative would be to follow the approach of the Sakhya Trizin position...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Correct. I don't know how closely any of you interact with Tibetan Karma Kagyu community, but I know quite a few ex-monks who are "up in arms" about the meeting. Some are quite upset, and are citing prior statments by Lamas like Thrangu Rinpoche about "One Karmapa," etc. People have jumped to concl...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I think that, despite the paucity of information about this meeting, there are a couple of interesting points that I haven’t seen raised anywhere. The first is that the meeting lasted over several days – unlike Ogyen Trinley’s meeting with Shamarpa in 2007 which only lasted an hour or two. Clearly t...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I am very happy that this meeting occured. I hope that the first visible step forward would be to organize joint Karma Kagyu monlam presided by both Karmapas, instead of having two separate ones. As I said, it's probably too soon to start creating expectations of where this could lead. Doing so wil...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Just speculation on my part, but given the recent health concerns of Karmapa Ogyen Trinley, there may have been some incentive to make this kind of meeting happen. (As far as I know, there are no current health concerns for either Karmapa.) For example, very likely, one will pass before the other. ...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Wow! This is a turn up for the books. Although I believe Karmapa Ogyen Trinley had hinted at some efforts in this regard recently. Don't know how they are going to heal the rift but delighted to see they are working on it. Let's hope something comes of it. Not a picture I thought I'd ever see: https...

Re: Brad Warner - Why Buddhist Teachers Go Bad

I don't know what shamans really do. So maybe is the best I can give you. Is it spiritual in the same way as Buddhist meditation is? I dunno. But I'd be wary about comparing or mix 'n' matching the two. Also even if I were to concede that a hunter gatherer shaman path is a path to enlightenment, cou...

Re: Brad Warner - Why Buddhist Teachers Go Bad

I'm open to hearing anything you have to say and haven't expressed an unwillingness to consider other views. I've never tried psychedelics and probably never will because they're illegal where I live, to disclose my personal experience. There is extensive research to support what I've said on the t...

Re: Brad Warner - Why Buddhist Teachers Go Bad

According to what he claims in the video, and elsewhere, he’s actively trying to not be perceived as something special. And that is something special. You seem to value it. Something about Brad rubs you the wrong way. Ignore him if he doesn't do it for you. Entheogens have been used by indigenous p...

Re: Nirvāṇa and Ataraxia

No I'd agree - ataraxia is not nirvana. Although the tranquillity that the Greek term suggests is certainly related to the enlightened experience. I think that the Stoic term eudaimonia or "flourishing" is closer to describing the state of an awakened person but not having reached neither buddhahood...

Re: Brad Warner - Why Buddhist Teachers Go Bad

I admire those who take on a eaching role (if legitimittized by their teacher of course) - they get a lot projected onto them - as this thread bears out. What exactly is being projected? The consensus seems to be that Brad is doing the projecting. We’re projecting his projecting? I agree too with h...
