Re: Situation of Kalu Rinpoche

The actual problem is the 'tulku' system...its also where the only real solution lies. Gotta agree with Simon here. Tulku system really seems to be just a source of trouble at this point in history. I really am finding all these lama dramas more and more disspiriting. Time for this outdated system ...

The only heavens and hells which I am aware of are those which we create within our own minds, believe to be true, and then proceed to inflict upon ourselves and each other.

The ground where we stand is the Pure Lotus Land
And this very body, the body of Buddha.

Re: Preparing for death

Although from a Zen rather than a Tibetan Buddhist perspective, might I suggest you look at The Five Invitations by Frank Ostaseski, one of the founders of the San Francisco Zen Hospice project. It contains some really core ideas about approaching death (and life).

Are you ready for that. As far as I see, you are all entangled in the hinayana/therwada/Mahayana sutra. No one understand or is ready to understand the LOTUS SUTRA . And without understanding benefits will be far from you. Since 2012, I have been visiting Dharma Wheel off and on to explain Lotus su...

Re: Is lineage enough?

I do think it is that simple. We are encouraged to investigate our potential root Guru for a long time and the quality of the teachings is not a good enough reason to rely on a Spiritual Guide. I also think the tradition should teach these values that the Spiritual Guide is supposed to conform to. ...

Re: Is lineage enough?

I think it's very simple. ... NUMBER 1 is a mind that is controlled by moral discipline - what is the Guru's example? To my mind that excludes all the crazy wisdom stuff so there's no excuse for misbehaviour. If a Spiritual Guide cannot show an example of a controlled mind and practice basic moral ...

Khenpo Karthar's "Wishfulfilling Wheel" deals specifically with the practice of White Tara based on liturgies by Jamgon Kongtrul I and Tai Situ IX. A great book on sadhana practice generally also.

Re: What's a "pure tradition"?

I always found the notion of purity a rather "puritan" idea.

The need to stress the purity of a tradition bears a strong odor of orthodoxy and fundamentalism, to my mind.

Re: Is lineage enough?

There are a number of traditional texts that deal with how to examine a potential Vajra Guru. Words of My Perfect Teacher has a good chapter on this I'm afraid it is just not that easy. That's why I was suggesting that one also need to look at constitution of a Sangha (something like they have here...

Re: Independent investigation confirms “physical, sexual, emotional abuse” by Sogyal Rinpoche

What, specifically, would make one think these individuals were not awakened? Specifically. 🤔 In detail. In terms of Sogyal, in the late ‘70s one of my lamas warned me that Sogyal was going to come to America but that I should stay away from Sogyal because he was a scumbag. To this day it is the ON...

I have not examined Ringu Tulku for the prescribed twelve years, but I do have a favorable impression of him.
I've taken several teachings over many years with Ringu Tulku and I can say he is indeed the real thing. An erudite scholar, wonderful teacher and really nice man.

Re: Independent investigation confirms “physical, sexual, emotional abuse” by Sogyal Rinpoche

There's an organization that is based in the UK and is very controversial. When it implodes, for whatever reason, we won't discuss it at DW. Mercifully. We're talking about Triratna here? Triratna - although very much not to my taste - has had a good long look at itself and has matured because of t...

Re: Is lineage enough?

So in the case of organisations like Rigpa or Shambala part of the onus falls on the "more" grown up and whole people in the groups to protect the "less-so" from predators. You cannopt really expect a potential victim to protect itself, by definition, their inability to protect themselves is what m...

Re: Is lineage enough?

Among other things, I think there needs to be a change in culture among Dharma practitioners, particularly in the West. Specifically, there needs to be a lot less credulity and passive acceptance of make-believe. Practitioners need to be increasingly intolerant of bullshit behavior. Be grownups. Be...

Still think you may be attributing more significance than is necessary to a dream. Follow the advice in your message footer. It's all fine, let it be. You run the risk of disturbing your peace of mind by indulging this belief. I do not think the other advice here is helpful even if the motivation of...

It's only a dream. It does not have any significance. Any ritual you do will only solidify what is neither real or important.

Don't let yourself worry about it. Just forget about it.

Is lineage enough?

I've been following the dicussion about Nakpa International on another thread and the role of lineage. I, probably like most people here, would want to know that a teacher belongs to a bona fide lineage before seeking teachings from them. And I think this holds true for the major orthodox forms of B...

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

I imagine PC has been advised not to speak publicly on this. When something like this happens in a group as big as Shambhala and a country a litigious as the US or Canada, I think the first thing an organization will do is try to dampen the fire until they can work out how they are going to respond....
