Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
But somehow it still seems unclear to you. You still seem to be grappling for a conclusion, thinking it seems unclear or something, despite having it spelled out repeatedly. That's where you are wrong. It looks pretty clear to me and I am not grappling for a conclusion. He has lied, repeatedly, abo...

Re: How can Zen be considered it's own thing...
Really terrific discussion, everyone. Thank you. BuddhaSoup talked about sangha in the most recent reply, just as I was thinking I would add something about that. What I would offer is that indeed sangha is tremendously beneficial, and "the teacher" is part of that community. Is sangha (wi...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
I'm not sure why we have to backtrack on this. Mumun's points are all valid - but I wonder if he actually has read this thread... Because if I really read it, I would of course be equally outraged, arrive at all the same conclusions, and join you in condemning him and everyone associated with his o...

Re: Becoming a Monk
Great suggestions above. I encourage you strongly to do a period of retreat. Temples and centers worth their salt will work with your financial situation -- we're not in this business for the money. Don't know where you live, but I and others can help connect you with places in your region. One thin...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
This conversation is winding down. I'm going to leave it open, though, in the event that someone from Five Mountain may like to comment... or perhaps something interesting that we didn't know already might emerge. Sounds good. In the absence of a comment from someone in the Five Mountain organizati...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
So...what's the truth? Definitely true is that he received inka from Ji Bong Soen Sa in 2006 in a public ceremony at Golden Wind Zen Center in Long Beach, California. Many witnesses, and photographs posted here: https://picasaweb.google.com/goldenwindzenorder/Inka2006" onclick="window.ope...

Re: finding a teacher.
i live six hours away from my teacher these days, i haven't been to see him in over a year, and he doesn't really do email, so i've decided that realistically i should start looking for a new one in my area because i'm struggling with some practice issues and getting instruction once a year or less...

Re: use of mala in zen/chan
You will see some people in Kwan Um zen centers (soen, western style) using malas if they are doing mantra practice. A teacher may recommend use of a mala to a student who feels distracted by mental activity during formal meditation or during other activities. The prescription is to match a repeated...

Re: "Applied" Zen: Ginny Whitelaw on Leadership
"Applied Zen!" This was actually the name of a workshop a friend of mine (a Buddhist monastic) was asked to teach at UCLA's Extension, as a single-day adult ed class. "Applied Zen?" Oy. She and I talked about what such a class might be, and I ended up going along with her and &qu...

Innovation in North American Zen
I am not looking to change the subject or hijack the thread, and if this merits an independent thread, by all means we could start one. There is an interesting sidebar to this conversation, a question that is not new and will probably come up more frequently moving forward: the role of creativity an...

Re: Thich Nhat Hanh: Reading Suggestions?
Someone already mentioned "The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching," and currently I am reading the more recent "Understanding our Mind." Books like these two do a decent job of introducing a general reader to Buddhist vocabulary and concepts and building bridges to practical, everyda...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
It's more about going slowly. The main players here are people I have known personally, and I care about them. I do have questions and I can imagine answers but I have very little information about this matter apart from an unsourced letter that was spammed in blog sections as its main method of dis...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
Most here are probably aware of the letter (widely posted online) from 2008... Was this posted anywhere officially with authorship clearly stated? The only distribution I saw for this letter was as comments posted anonymously on various blogs. It was posted as an anonymous comment even on my zen ce...

Re: Five Mountain Zen Order & Paul Lynch
Lynch himself was given inka by one of Sahn Sunim's students, Ji Bong (Robert Moore). I'd like to know what relation obtains between Five Mountain and Lynch and the other schools in Sahn Sunim's transmission (Kwan Um, Golden Wind...). And Moore Sunim in particular. Does Lynch's teacher teach Five M...

Basically Buddhism that places very little or no emphasis on the sutras and gives meditation and personal discovery a very large importance ? It endows the practice of meditation with great importance. It does not exclude the value of cognitive teachings, as found in sutras and commentaries and dha...
