Re: Mixing Worldly and Dharma Paths

Well. It is made a big deal by fellow Buddhist travelers. Thus the OP. None of the above is any real problem. I'm curious what sort of fellow Buddhist travelers are making a big deal out of these ideas you're sharing. We're supposed to examine our teachers carefully, so how much faith are we to put...

Re: Offering mandala plates

The extra drops of saffron water have done the trick - thanks for all the suggestions! I started with Longchen Nyinthik and then there were some obstacles, such as my Lama died, the practice group left town and my inspiration suffered. Thought I would never see the proverbial light at the end of th...

Re: Offering mandala plates

Are you continuing Ngondro, doing another Ngondro or are you just having fun and being generous? :D I'm doing another one. I did the Karma Kamtsang one quite a few years ago. I only continued doing a bit of that, because to make it "round" it's nice to do the whole set, but there is quite a lot of ...

Lot of holy places burning down.

Ah, just coincidence.
Global warming? Bad joke, sorry.

Re: On Generosity & Offerings

Something I wrote last year for Loppon Ogyan Tanzin Rinpoche's sangha: "Paying for teachings. One of the issues that came up in informal discussion with other Sangha members during the retreat in Warsaw, was the subject of people refusing to pay for the teachings and empowerments. Maybe this refusa...

Re: Books for a beginner

Hi, It looks like the first book (https://www.amazon.com/Feeding-Your-Demons-Resolving-Conflict/dp/0316013137) is not technically a manual for doing a Chod practice, but rather a practice grounded in Chod that was developed by Tsultrim Allione... I'm not sure if, considering this, the practice does...

This doesn't answer your questions, but have you heard about this place? They seem to believe in Buddhism and gardening being compatible.

Re: Andrew Yang is running for President. Who?

Here's what I'm thinking of. http://www.liscdc.org/our-work/. It's across the country but this is just the Washington DC/Baltimore area page of the organization. They take funding from big banks as a result of the Community Reinvestment Act and other large non-profit funders and invest in local com...

Re: Andrew Yang is running for President. Who?

"Unscrupulous" kind of describes American Business Practices, doesn't it? It was thought out, not sure if "well" is applicable. It was quite organized - it doesn't become a giant, lucrative scam, big enough to crash the world economy, without being very well organized. In a nutshell, at the core, t...

Re: Andrew Yang is running for President. Who?

The housing policy in the 90's which led to disaster was a result of a lot of unscrupulous lending practices and not a well thought out and organized system. It led to a lot of misuse. I don't think my ideas are anything like the conservatives in the U.K. because I'm actually advocating for a much ...

Re: working hard

A lot of people, including some teachers, do seem to taken the gentler approach and say 'just do your best' or the like. It is a trick. Your best is 100% of your current capacity. There is nothing gentle about that. Maybe I should pm you, but anyhow, is it a good idea to ask for your teache...

Re: working hard

I am going to disagree, to an extent, with what people have said so far. I believe it means that you have to bust your chops. Put in the time. Don't skip sessions. Observe your samaya (vows) like they are your eyes. Purify when you break samaya. Push your comfort zone to breaking point and beyond. ...

Re: Andrew Yang is running for President. Who?

I think the UBI is a bad idea, frankly. Handing out checks for life is asking for trouble. Isn't that what it is? Maybe I'm misinformed. Are you asking if UBI is trouble? We've got trouble, and more coming. They're supposedly going to start it in Stockton, California so let's see how it goes...And ...

I don't know if you're speaking specifically only about the Tibetan government, but I'd disagree from my layperson vantage point. Much of the developed world has now been exposed to Tibetan Buddhist philosophy in a way it couldn't have been if it weren't for the exile. There is a lot more appreciat...

Re: PRC is ridiculous

The government in exile needs to be disbanded and Tibetans needed to emigrate over 30 years ago. This gambit has lost on every front. After 60 years they are addicted to charitable donations and living in a ghetto. I don't know if you're speaking specifically only about the Tibetan government, but ...
