Re: The Future

People have been saying whether one becomes a buddhist has something to do with the person's merit and karmic connection. So..I am wondering.... Buddhists and great masters have been liberating animals in huge number. Before being liberated, holy prayers, mantras and powerful aspirations have been ...

Re: What is the purpose of chanting?

For some its more profound in english (becouse of easy understanding the meaning), for others its more profound in tibetan. I love tibetan mellody and how the language sounds, for some reason (i guess karmic) its easy for me to remember tibetan sutras and then to follow them with understanding the ...

Re: Where are 1% of Americans?

I was amazed to find that the prison I volunteer at has zero staffed chemical dependency counselors or therapists. Despite having "prisoners bill of rights" posted all over which supposedly guarantee treatment to those who need it, the only treatment available in some places is prisoner-run AA and ...

Re: Where are 1% of Americans?

Most people who are convicted of crimes committed those crimes while intoxicated on drugs or alcohol. This is an old article but I think it is still valid: http://www.nytimes.com/1998/01/09/us/drugs-or-alcohol-linked-to-80-of-inmates.html Norways's approach, OTOH, http://www.businessinsider.com/why...

Re: The world is getting worse and worse

I don't know if things are worse, but I don't think things we're better before. 6-17 million murdered in the holocaust, genocide, slavery and all that? injustices were merely covered up and people were ignorant or feigned ignorance of injustice and wrongdoing. Now it's just more obvious thanks to me...

Re: What is the purpose of chanting?

Only a guess but one of the purposes of chanting may be to get closer to your "buddha-nature" There really is no "chanting", it is either prayers or sadhanas. It is a good idea to get to know what that is. /magnus That's what I thought, as well. I also have heard from a teacher that saying these pr...

Sheeeeeit, that is the whole point of the 13th amendment, keeping slavery legal: Required viewing for readers of this thread: https://www.netflix.com/title/80091741 I don't have Netflix, but I did hear about this show. Yes, the whole system needs change. I could have sworn that the notion of prison...

Re: Where are 1% of Americans?

I have a fair amount of experience with people currently or formerly incarcerated. I don't believe the prisons or any industry should profit from forced labor. Re: Where are 1% of Americans?

I have a fair amount of experience with people currently or formerly incarcerated. I don't believe the prisons or any industry should profit from forced labor. But the problem's deeper and bigger than that. If it were up to me, I'd put most of the money spent on prisons into education, job, mental h...

Re: Job help!

Tharpa Chodron here on DW has experience with social work, I think, she may be able to help you. Singapore may be different, but in the US a Master's Degree is required, pay is not that great, and hours are long. The work can be very rewarding, but very difficult, depending on your clientele. Socia...

Re: Becoming a moderator?

Yep! I went last year as well. It was really nice this year to do the Rushen for a week before some Trekchod at the end. I plan on going next year and man, I hope to meet some fellow Dharmawheelers there. I've met some lurkers there who recognized me. Haven't seen any regulars there... yet :) I pre...

Re: The Future

So here's a little embarrassing story. :emb: I stay in the southern U.S. and Buddhism isn't really a thing here except for small pockets here and there. Anyways I went to a dharma center to try and connect with dharma practitioners and just see what's going on. So as I arrive to the center I walk u...

Re: Random Thoughts

Saw "All the Money in the World" last night (with my long awaited Movie Pass). A really great film, despite Michelle Williams' terrible acting imo. What a story. Definitely has something to say about Samsara.

Ridley Scott's work has been lousy lately, but he redeemed himself with this.

Re: Will Oprah Run for President?

He means the Illuminati. No I don't. Neck-bearded millennials mean the Illuminati, not me... So who controls the president in your eyes? I'd say the locus of control is very hard to pinpoint, if at all possible. One side wants Nafta, Daca, ACA, etc. the other wants to dismantle those policies. If y...

Re: Will Oprah Run for President?

I didn't see the speech, just heard the buzz. Kevin Same here. I just woke up one morning and the world was talking about Oprah for president, with no idea where this came from. Tonight I'm hearing they have poll numbers showing Oprah with a 10% lead over Trump in 2020, 49% of voters would vote for...

Reagan pulled it off, so why not Oprah?

Like I said elsewhere: it does not matter who is president, what matters is who controls the president.
You mean the people of the United States, right? ;)
