Re: Karma, "soulmates" etc

So, I'm curious what anyone's take, including the actual Buddhist official outlook is on "soul mates", chance encounters, predestined relationships and all that. ... Perhaps the nearest I know of to a soul mate story in Buddhism is the relationship between the Buddha and his wife, Yashodhara. Here ...

Re: Football World Cup.

Well unlike Scotland at least we qualified. And having qualified reached the semi-finals. And finished fourth overall. Higher than Spain, Italy, Germany or (cough) Brazil. Like I said, the English think they're god's gift to soccer. ;) But anyhow, as a Brit I am sure you have a well developed sense...

Re: Football World Cup.

Most adult English people long ago relinquished the idea that because we invented the modern game it gives us some kind of privilege.. Gareth and the lads will return. My Scottish husband says England thinks they're god's gift to soccer, but the only gifts from god to soccer come from Brazi...

Re: Karma, "soulmates" etc

Hi Tharpa, And how does Tibetan astrology look at these things. I imagine considering how important it is, they must have a notion about this stuff. Astrology can be used to find compatibility between people. When people are highly compatible they can be of great benefit to each other. It all depen...

Karma, "soulmates" etc

So, I'm curious what anyone's take, including the actual Buddhist official outlook is on "soul mates", chance encounters, predestined relationships and all that. My understanding is that our karma determines just about everything, so when we meet people it's due to our karma? But what exactly does t...

I was hoping to do a retreat with him this winter. From everything I've heard, he was a great teacher and I am sorry I didn't get to actually study with him.

Regarding the samaya of not having sex with non-practitioners: What are those of us who have relationships with non-practitioners to do, divorce or otherwise leave our partners? Re: CTR, polygamy, cocaine, etc: Discuss

Sounds like she is accusing his son, Sakyong Mipham, of abuse of women, but what exactly he's ever done, I don't know and somehow find him an unlikely candidate for misbehavior. I'm not an apologist, but I think one can "sometimes" separate the person from the art or work they produce. Woody Allen ...

Re: Dudjom Yangsi Dorje Drollö empowerment Toronto

That's great! Today I participated in a Collection of Seven Treasuries Guru Rinpoche Tsok with Rinpoche, and it was wonderful in many ways. I was in the entry way while he came into the temple and gave him a khata and then after it was over, offered him a khata again. There were a lot of people, man...

Re: Football World Cup.

I'm getting into it, despite never growing up in the whole soccer/football culture growing up in the US. We cheered for Mexico, that win against Germany was awesome. My Scottish husband said the Germans are a bunch of mid-field playing douchebags, whereas Mexico played with a lot more zest. His game...

Re: Thoughts on Dzogchen without buddhism?

My teacher said in Europe there are teachers who may give Dzogchen teachings without any Buddhist prerequisites, but in our lineage (Nyingma) "where the breath of Dakinis is still warm", we believe in practicing the preliminaries, i.e. Ngondro, first. That's what I follow. He also said any intellec...

Thanks everyone, I just had a LONG conversation worth her this afternoon. She insisted that both guys are just friends and that she is single. I told her so am I and I truly feel like we had a moment there. This is the problem I think. I like her. Well, obviously. That's been the problem from the s...

I'll admit I occasionally look at the Daily Mail, and saw a couple days ago pics of his girlfriend with another dude and thought, "uh oh.". And then two days later he commits suicide... Of course it's tragic, but as a Buddhist it's weeks like this that remind me of the real truth behind the whole Sa...

Re: Korean War Over?

Concentration camps aren't really the same as prisons. You can argue about the injustices and disparity in US prison populations, but that still doesn't make them "concentration camps." I think most Nazi concentration camp victims and other political prisoners would feel insulted to compare their e...

Re: DNA TESTS

Interesting article in today's NYT https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/27/health/dna-privacy-golden-state-killer-genealogy.html I thought the police did a brilliant job. DNA evidence can exonerate people as well as convict them. Personally, I think the good outweighs the risks. And in the article it se...

Re: DNA TESTS

But seriously, folks, as interesting as the results of DNA testing might be, I would under no circumstances willingly submit such personal information to a faceless corporation which can be counted on to use it in deleterious ways in the future. People thought Facebook was harmless, too. DNA = Do N...
