Re: Another Dzogchen/Ngondro Q...

If one is doing Ngondro in one tradition, is it still a good idea to make use of an opportunity for direct introduction with a teacher from another lineage? Definitely, if one has trust and devotion in that other lama. That is the absolute most important thing aside from bodhichitta, with which it'...

Re: Validity of online empowerments

ime, the way ChNN did the atiyoga transmission worked perfectly, but it is paramount that the student prepares himself, know what to do, how to do it, already be in an according attitude, disposition, whatever one needs at the previous hours and days for getting in a receptive attitude. i did the e...

Re: Subtle body in Dzogchen

My translation of the Blazing Lamp Tantra and is commentary is the single most exhaustive source on this topic in any language other than Tibetan. It will be published by Wisdom on 4/21/202O, and is at the printers now. You should have the transmission and permission to practice thogal in order to ...

Re: Career Advice for a Young Nyingmapa

Nursing is one of the best careers for a buddhist. It is flexible, portable, and it involves caring directly for people who are suffering. It also allows one to do retreat attend teachings and so on. Malcolm is not wrong about nursing. A caveat, though, is that how much one will make varies remarka...

Re: Do Buddhas have any true multiplicity, or are they all emanations of the dharmakāya?

Buddhas don't share one mind. They each have their own wisdom continuum. All those continua are the same qualitatively, but not quantitatively. IE all water is the same in substance, but all bodies of water aren't one big body of water. But ultimately the real buddha is the dharmakaya, which is empt...

Re: Troma nagmo and rainbow body

This is what I maybe doubtful. As far as I know, Trechok is Samantha with the view. There shouldn't be any difference for a person who realised/attained the view through other methods and are able to maintain in that view or state all the time. Tregchod is being in knowledge of the true nature; one...

Re: Troma nagmo and rainbow body

The explanation is that merit is crucial in actually realising the view. That lama accumulated sufficient merit by persevering in his mandala offering practise and attained the view with no need for pointing out. Is implicit, guru devotion is in his mandala offering practice so he received blessing...

Re: Sit-down with Dudjom Lineage Lama

Pema-la, Actually, in terms of Vajrayana, it does hurt the Lama if He or She transmits a practice and the recipient doesn't do it. It's not just a wash, a mulligan, a do-over. (I'm not talking about Hinayana or Mahayana here.) In transmitting a Tantrayana or Vajrayana practice, there is an implied ...

Re: Sit-down with Dudjom Lineage Lama

Don't ask for anything. Apologize! Apologize for having received ngondro and then not completed it. I'm not sure why one would feel the need to apologize for this. In not completing the ngondro, one is only hurting oneself. It doesn't hurt the lama one bit. The lama is not our daddy or our boss or ...

Re: Mipham's Shower of Blessings

Question about the tsok written for Shower of Blessings: typically one self-generates as a deity when doing tsok, but nothing is mentioned in The Excellent Vase of Splendor about this, and there's no self-generation in Shower of Blessings. Anyone else know if this tsok is just unique in that respect...

Re: Why there is no Mahavairocana Tantra in General Mahayana?

It seems that some people in this thread are using the words "tantra" and "sutra" interchangeably, when they're not. They're two different kinds of text. It's not a requirement that one receive any kind of transmission to read sutra, and they're written in generally straightforward language; this is...

Re: What are the Tibetan "Fearful Dharma Protectors"?

Yamantaka is a Buddha, one of countless forms Buddha Manjushri appears in to tame beings very difficult to tame. The yamas are a class of beings, and they were causing trouble for others and themselves; out of compassion & wisdom, Manjushri appeared to them in a form they could relate to--but one mo...

Re: Jamgon Ju Mipham transmissions?

Indeed, Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal holds many, if not all, of Mipham's transmissions. In addition to Gesar, I know for sure he has given the short and medium length Manjushri, Vajrapani, White Tara, and others, and of course the reading transmission for Shower of Blessings.

Re: Simplest Most Effective Most Efficient Deity Yoga to Purify Negative Karma

I like doing "Stirring the Depths" or "The Inexpressible Absolute Confession" within the context of Vajrasattva practice, the latter essentially being as much a purification practice as an essentially guru yoga practice; and then I rest in the natural state at the end. And of course ganapuja is an e...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

Could be a Mahamudra question too: Once a person begins to have some confidence in distinguishing mind from it's nature, is there any particular point in working with conventional thoughts and appearances in meditation anymore, rather than simply resting in the nature of mind? Is it now time to exa...

Re: Where to start?

I have to second Pema Chophel's point about the principal importance being finding a lama you determine you can trust, feel a connection to, and whose teachings resonate with you. All Vajrayana teachings--whether Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, Gelug, or otherwise--are from the Buddha, so all are completely ...

I have been learning and meditating on my own (and I basically know nothing). I am drawn to Nyingma but I am confused about the different lineages within Nyingma and unsure how to find a community. Can anyone help me out with some explanation? (If it matters, I am in northern NJ/NYC). Thanks in adv...

Re: Ethics, sangha, and Dzogchen

This Padmasambhava quote I think is a very challenging one because of its dichotomy: how can you have both the eagle's and the frog's perspective at the same time? I have no response to that but I have confidence that it is possible. It really just means that until one has arrived in total realizat...

The bolded "tried" above was a typo. I meant to type "tries," but it's too late to be able to edit the original post.
