Re: Looking to get started in Dzogchen practice.

The point is to find a teacher you admire and have confidence in. Then, just do whatever practice they teach you, whether that be Dzogchen or something else.

Karma Chakme Reading Transmission at KTD Monastery

Just wanted to give a heads-up for those who may be interested: Lama Tobden of Thrangu Monastery will be offering the reading transmission of all 60 volumes of the works of Karma Chakme (Raga Asya) at KTD this fall. This will take place over two 3-week sessions. Part One from August 3 to 25, and Par...

Re: British Museum to Return “Stunning” Gandharan Buddhist Artifacts to Afghanistan

Of course you put it in those terms. There is something to it, but there's also the bit that these kinds of artifacts belong to all humanity. Cast it any way you want, the fact remains, they'd be safer in the British Museum than in Kabul where there is a constant threat that bozos with sledgehammer...

Re: Tonglen vs chanting mani mantra

I often enjoy practicing tonglen informally off the cushion. It can be a great practice when you encounter the homeless, addicts, or really anyone you see in distress. To take on their suffering immediately can be a very powerful practice.

Re: Karma Kagyu online resource

I’ve been using it for the past year after I attended Mingyur Rinpoche’s retreat in St Paul last summer. It really is a wonderful resource that is constantly growing. There is always a “live” class that is ongoing as well as access to archives of all the previous courses. The current course that wil...

Re: Rime subforum in Tibetan Buddhism

In my experience Rime is more of an attitude than anything else so I’m not sure it really needs it own forum. Time practitioners still follow one of the moon lineages, just with an open heart to the others. I say this as someone who come up in Kalu Rinpoche’s lineage.

Re: How to start a personal retreat?

Ask the teacher who gave you the practice. Sorry, I realize that reply may have come off as flippant and that was not my intention. I rejoice in the fact that you have the desire and time in your life to do this retreat. But you really should seek the advice of your teacher on this kind of thing. R...

Re: Turning daily life into retreat

It's been challenging for me to diligently practice daily. I usually get off work earlier than my wife, so I have at least a couple of hours to myself - time which I should use better. Motivation is a big problem for me. That and the fact that I can be horribly lazy. :? In my experience just establ...

Re: Tibetan language question

It depends on your goals, as I’m sure you know that colloquial Tibetan is very different from classical Tibetan. If your goal is to read Dharma texts, classical is what you should learn. If your goal is to converse with a Tibetan (ie work as a translator) then start with colloquial. I have heard dif...

Re: "You need to know Tibetan to achieve enlightenment in this life"

Well, as a traditionalist, until a highly realized being translates into English from Tibetan, I think there is blessing in the Tibetan language. (If you feel there are English translations that bear the same blessing, or translations into any other language, that’s fine.....keep on practicing them...

He gave the empowerment for “Ta Chag Khyung Sum“ Hayagriva, Varjapani, and Garuda. Maybe others can comment on the history of this grouping. As far as going off topic, i would hardly consider this sort of thing a problem. Receiving meditation instructions from Rinpoche is a very wonderful thing and ...
