Or in UK practice at least, worn everytime they go to Wat or Temple by the particularly mirthless. The sort of practitioner who would see this forum as a hotbed of heresy. am I thinking of Christmas Humphreys, or Christopher Titmuss here? Titmuss maybe, not Humphreys who had the personal style of a...

Re: -ise vs -ize

The use of -ize in British English is referred to as “Oxford Spelling” and claims to be more etymologically correct. It is regarded as an affectation that is used by the “properly educated” by many people (whereas the American tendency to add -ize etc. to everything is seen as just wrong e.g. burgl...

Re: What it means to be a ngakpa

Just to clarify a point, the Aro dress most of the time in unremarkable western clothes, even when on retreat and when attending teachings.* Most of them hold down jobs. They are a jolly bunch and remarkably relaxed and unneurotic... and uncultic. Having said all that, their way is not for me. But I...

Re: Instant Presence and Physical Pain

Dear, I do not think the four reliances is rejecting a Master. Not to focus on the outer individual-personality-form is not the same as rejecting, perhaps its' to not feed dualistic perception (perceiver-perceived). But Guru is essential. Guru is Buddha - is awaken. There is said if we perceive a h...

Re: Instant Presence and Physical Pain

In this prespective, in the standpoint of buddha, we have no other choice than the four reliances, 'a person' (or teacher) also is one of the element of uncertainty, every person has their own agenda and opinions, so can never be recommended as a source to be relied, in this case, only the dharma i...

Re: Beers and alcohol

You are going to get a whole spectrum of replies Matthew. This does not mean that the question is a bad one. But it does mean that the answers will have to be reflected on in a balanced way. My own view is that if you can a glass of wine or beer without it increasing heedlessness..(an appropriate wo...

Re: Instant Presence and Physical Pain

Trolling doesn't stop being trolling just because it is sincerely wrong.
A one-sided debate with one side relentlessly ploughing on against all evidence and deaf to all reasoned argument is also a form of trolling.

You may also want to make sure you are not deficient in Vitamin D. That's an interesting point. I was diagnosed with low vitamin D last week and now I'm on a daily D supplement. It's great. Particularly important in winter, at least in those climes where the sun is largely absent in winter. NB Immu...

I only know what I have read..but I know that there is a theory that it is caused, or at least worsened, by inflammation of the gut. And that dietary measures can help.
