but that just leaves us claiming that the other side believes in a bunch of mythological hooey.
Yes, you finally figured it out...
I wouldn't go that far personally.
Myths can be very potent teaching aids.
What they are not is any kind of history or record of conventional reality.

Re: Is there Buddhism without rebirth?

That would be considered by some notable Buddhist teachers to be a non-sequitur Ceomgenu.

The criterion according to those teachers is not what we identify with.
It is rather what drives our practice of Dharma.

Self-identifying as 'Buddhist' they would say, is not enough.

Re: winning the lottery...???

My late father used to buy £100 worth of lottery tickets every month. (This was after my mother died, he would not have dared while she was alive). On one occasion he won £150. This was enough to keep his ticket-buying behaviour going for years. He was, as the Behaviourists say, on an intermittent s...

Re: Whaaaaats Going On..?

Here in Sydney, we're just entering our first heatwave of the year. We're expecting >45c in Sydney's west. Every year, the heatwaves get longer and hotter - last year was a record but this year might easily top it. Greenhouse effect, no doubt whatever in my mind. Rather you than me. Im a typical po...

Sorry but one of us is completely confused.

I will assume that it is me for the sake of the thread, and step off.

As far as I am concerned Mantrik answered the query some hours ago anyway.

Re: Mala Etiquette

If this is intended for Vajrayana practice, which seems to be the intention of the OP, then this is not the right attitude! There seems to be a contradiction between this response and the second quote in your sig. I fact, there might be, if you misunderstand everything and also take all out of cont...

Re: Mala Etiquette

Everyone who carefully read the above text can see clearly that a mala in Vajrayana is not simply a tool, as it's not just also a "magic" thing, sorcery or whatever you want! This kind of attitude from practitioners is actually one out of many reasons of why Vajrayana is a "secretive" thing, or at ...

Re: Mala Etiquette

In the old days Malas were made with what was at hand. They are counting device only so don't get too worried about how and why. The book on Malas is made for those in the West that must always make things way more complicated than they need to be. Buy or make one that you like, use how it feels co...

Re: Mala Etiquette

I think Mantrik has given you a complete and useful answer. Malas are simply tools..even mantras themselve are skillful means, not absolutes. But if you want preferences then I use an old bodhi seed mala with a lot of positive associations with its previous owner. I use my right hand. I do not cross...

Re: Morality of stockholding

There is nothing immoral about owning stocks as long as they have nothing to do with guns or alcohol. Owning shares of energy companies is wildly unethical and immoral in my opinion. According to buddhist morality: "A lay follower should not engage in five types of business. Which five? Business in...

Re: All is One

White Lotus I have just read a post of yours from 2010, six years and a half years ago, in which you make more or less the same points you make in this thread, and get the same replies that you get now.

Something for you to ponder I think.
