Re: Right Wing and Left Wing Totalitairianism and Fascism

Agree with Jeff H, as is often the case. I think the difficult thing is, because such a huge diversity of opinions is now available, there will be takers for every opinion across the spectrum of views. And many of those views will be outlandish, from your P-O-V. I find myself completely at odds with...

Re: One Syllable Prajñāpāramitā

I learned about 'the Prajñāpāramitā in one letter' many years ago, but the way it was taught to me, is that it is the Sanskrit letter 'A'. This is the beginning of the alphabet, hence symbolically the start of all knowledge. But it is also the negative particle, the negation, so 'a-' is the equivale...

Re: Whaaaaats Going On..?

Yes, the Aussie Christmas would take some getting used to for a Pom. Instead of snow it's beaches, mangos and Test cricket. Which actually turns the whole thing upside down, because Christmas incorporates the traditional European 'mid-winter fest' and here it's the hottest time of year. Although ove...

Re: Whaaaaats Going On..?

Here in Sydney, we're just entering our first heatwave of the year. We're expecting >45c in Sydney's west. Every year, the heatwaves get longer and hotter - last year was a record but this year might easily top it. Greenhouse effect, no doubt whatever in my mind.

Re: Buddhist Billionaire plans to change China

One of the comments at the bottom that column is 'Guo wants to be president himself''. I think it's quite possible that this is what he intends by 'regime change'. No doubt he is now classified as an enemy of the state, I imagine he has a price on his head.

Re: The Need for Enlightenment

Sorry for the rabbit trail. Hey no apologies needed! Glad to find a kindred spirit, and I find them very interesting readings. I am familiar with Hadot, although the only volume of his in my library is his Plotinus. I'm thinking of enrolling in this course next semester, IF I can bag a new contract...

Re: The Need for Enlightenment

Aha! Arabic for Plato! Never would have guessed that, if you hadn't mentioned it. Myself, I never had an education in 'the Classics'. I guess if I'd gone to a Catholic school, I would have had it beaten into me with a cane (they used to do that, when I went to school), and then I would simply have r...

Spoilt for choice! I picked a Bean Products one, which was good although a seam split after a couple of years. Mended it, going strong.

Re: The Need for Enlightenment

I’m an eclectic. For some reason, I am strongly drawn to Platonism. I feel like I might have lived somewhere along the Silk Road in some previous life, where these traditions met and mingled. That’s one of the reasons I’ve always liked Zen Catholics, like Ama Samy and the like.

The Need for Enlightenment

There are many debates about whether Buddhism is really a religion, or a philosophy; or perhaps that 'dharma' has a different meaning to 'religion' (which I think is true); and so on. Religion after all casts many shadows, even more so in the modern technological age. Then there are many who describ...

Re: Western Myth of Zen

Buddhism is about meditation. It is not a religion, it only looks like one, but that is a mistake. That's why Buddhists in the West are called 'practitioners' because unless you meditate it is not even Buddhism. Hmmm. I have learned, it’s religious in the sense you ‘do it religiously’. I mean, it’s...

Re: Karmic accrual and Momentariness

When I did my only Goenka retreat 10 years ago, I was interested that one of the evening dhamma talks was on kalapas, which were said to be of momentary but definite duration - a minute duration to be sure, but a definite quantum was given in the talk. This was said by Goenka to exemplify the way in...

Would a Buddhist say, 'without Dharma, we are condemned to exist forever in samsara'? Which, while not the same, ain't that far off.

Re: Has the Heart Sutra Been Finally Proven as Chinese Apocrypha?

Jayarava plainly has a barrow to push, as he’s trying to make a name for himself as a kind of freelance Buddhist scholar. I have interacted with him on this forum in the past, and in my view while he is well-educated, he tends to favour a naturalistic philosophy with I think is out of sync with the ...

Re: Prince Harry Engaged to Meghan Markle

That’s the actress who played the girl who had the knee trembler with Mike Ross in the stationary cabinet (in Suits. That’s what sprang to my mind when I worked out who she was, anyway.) But nowadays celebrity IS royalty. Money, power, adulation, all of the things that used to be attached to royalty...

As this is in Academic Discussion forum, it is appropriate to mention a book which discusses this issue in a lot of detail: The Buddhist Unconscious: The Alaya-vijñana in the context of Indian Buddhist Thought, William S. Waldron http://a.co/gtWYYDJ Waldron has a few PDF’s available on his website w...

Im in USA and can't get through. I'd talk to your ISP after seeking the simple solutions, e.g. clearing cache etc, I've checked consistently and not found it down. I just checked again and found that it is (still) down for me. Perhaps you could tell them there's a problem? I can't even do that beca...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

I think in Chinese Mahāyāna, for instance Fo Guang Shan, the head of the order, Master Hsin Yun, is to all intents the guru of the order (although the Indian term ‘guru’ is not used.) But in any case, he is the lineage holder and the principle author of the many books and other media published by th...
