Re: Remote Teaching Centres and Programmes

I posted the last one to try and keep these resources in one thread. I haven’t really been able to settle into any of the particular online offerings as yet, although I am keeping up every day practice and reading. But what with the amount of activity going on in this online teaching space, I think ...

Re: Jayarava's New Thesis on Heart Sutra: Sanskrit Version Deliberate Forgery by Tang Chinese

It’s not so much that he considers himself academic, as this is the kind of effort it takes to get some kind of profile from the position he’s in as an independent scholar. I respect the guy’s diligence and obvious acuity, but I do wonder about the motivation. Anyway I recall reading Tricycle piece ...

If it came to that, the 1% wouldn't constitute a single decent snack for the 99%.

And then it would be back to hunter-gatherer. :stirthepot:

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

What has been or is being destroyed in American civil discourse is the idea of principled opposition . This is the essential idea of allowing for a range of viewpoints and differences of view which can be accommodated even though they plainly disagree. Now, the aim is to vilify and destroy one's opp...

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

Yeah if there’s anyone on this forum who would just love the ex-chief of the CIA, then that’d be you, right? Plato’s been credited with justifying Fascism, by Popper. Actually it was the rule of enlightened yet disinterested philosopher-kings - which would be an absolutely fantastic solutio...

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

Democracy is unfolding in Australia and they may become the third major English speaking nation to become a democracy (after New Zealand and Canada). The Commonwealth of Australia came into being on 1 January 1901 with the federation of the six Australian colonies. The inaugural election took place...

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

Too bad these guys fall so neatly into the deep state conspiracy theory. What's too bad, is that so many people are willing to believe in the 'deep state conspiracy' meme. I was looking at Rick Wilson's latest book, Everything Trump Touches Dies , which is an excoriating, pull-no-punches critique a...

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

It’s plainly obvious that Trump is not acting in the national interest, but wholly and solely in his own. But in his mind, he can’t make any such distinction, such is his egotistical and delusional narcissism. Until the GOP gets the guts to stand up, this will continuing spiralling downwards, at eno...

Re: Two Truths Sauvignon Blanc

The real question is -- do you drink it all at once, or gradually. Gradually. I don’t altogether abstain from intoxicants, but I usually stop well short of intoxication. [But I get the double entendre ;) ] Actually after taking that photo, I read the label on the back of the bottle: There are alway...

Well so long as it goes in one end, and out the other, then it will have performed as expected. I'll keep you posted.

(I suppose it's a bit uncool posting about such things on a Buddhist forum, but then, I did post it in Lounge.)

Re: Meditation on Awareness

That said, when one meditates on awareness, where then is this awareness located? Nowhere. Location is in awareness, awareness is not in location. You’re trying to objectify it, locate it amongst the seen and the known. But it can’t be done, because it is prior to that. Hence, un-knowing, ‘don’t kn...

Two Truths Sauvignon Blanc

Wasn't even shopping for this variety, but then, as soon as I saw it, I had to buy it, and as soon as buying it, had to post it here. (I might try and find out later as to how it came by its name.)

Watts is completely dated Well if you can find me a more current citation for that idea, then I be pleased to use it, but otherwise it’s just The genetic fallacy (also known as the fallacy of origins or fallacy of virtue) is a fallacy of irrelevance that is based solely on someone's or something's ...

Re: Dharma government?

Actually a lot of the dynamic in this analysis goes back to the origins of Western culture. The word 'orthodoxy' means 'right belief' or 'right worship' - subtly different from 'samma ditthi', right view or understanding. And in the formative years of Western culture, a lot of blood was shed over wh...

enlightenment values are not accurately characterized as utilitarian or pragmatic. Also, many traditional or religious values, in practice, are frighteningly utilitarian or pragmatic. For example, isn't Trump supposed to represent traditional or conservative values? I think this reaction is quite c...

Re: Dharma government?

In a sense, all philosophy might be seen as rejecting the transcendent because philosophy is based in reason. Although philosophy can also be seen as a method of seeking truth and wisdom. The crucial difference with secular-scientific thinking is that 'seeking truth' always presumes the separation ...

Re: Dharma government?

I said 'a certain kind of secular" sensibility' - insofar as the Buddha rejected religious ritualism, hereditary priesthood, and many other elements of Hindu religiosity. But I also said that the goal of Nirvāṇa is outside the range of secular philosophy.
