Re: Another day in America

The term "well-regulated militia" first came from the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights, and the language around that was clearly imported into the second amendment. Rather different from arguing about whether background checks are even necessary for some random person to buy a modern military-st...

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

But I also agree that talk of the ‘eternal absolute’ is not the Buddhist way of teaching. Perhaps ambiguity and reification creeps in, in the translation across cultures and languages.

Re: Lotus Vs wisdom Vs flower garland sutra worldview?

One example I give is the difference between fake medicine and real medicine (leaving aside the placebo effect). If you had been poisoned and were then offered two bottles, one of which contained an antidote, and one of which did not, then which one you choose has life-or-death consequences. And thi...

Re: Meditation timer app?

For sure! Although to be honest my usage of Insight is very minimal, literally just timing and reporting. (I’m participating in a 365-day sit for 2018.) My wife istens to many of the guided meditations but I am just using the timer. One thing I would love to investigate is the incorporation of Pali ...

Re: Can you make fire with just two sticks and your hands?

In case anyone is interested, there’s a classic 1980’s film called Quest for Fire : In the prehistoric world, a Cro-Magnon tribe depends on an ever-burning source of fire, and through misfortune their’s becomes extinguished. Lacking the knowledge to start a new fire, the tribe sends three warriors o...

I went to a talk by Lama Yeshe around that time. It was electrifying and I’m sure had huge impact on me.

Re: Another day in America

I’m afraid that unless and until the association of owning weapons with freedom is abandoned, there not much hope for change. It paints those calling for gun control as ‘enemies of freedom’ and gun owners as ‘defenders of freedom’. Whereas I would have thought that in reality, ‘civic freedom’ is NOT...

Re: Questions about Zen

Hi and welcome to DharmaWheel forum! I was to drawn to Zen by the books of D T Suzuki and Alan Watts, and also the classic book, Zen Mind Beginner's Mind, which I must have bought in 1972. I never formally joined a Zen sangha or trained at a centre, but I studied Buddhism to MA level, and sit every ...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

When it comes to being ‘dismissive’ in relation to this matter, it is the sceptics who dismissive. Stevenson spent many years at his research tasks, conducting thousands of interviews and investigating thousands of cases, many of which he also dismissed. But many of those that remain are quite well-...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

But what are you proposing? Are you proposing that because someone lost a limb in an accident in a previous life, they’re born deformed in this life?? I'm not proposing that myself - simply commenting on Stevenson's cases where he documents such things. The article from which I quoted is this Scien...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

it’s well known (and I’ve seen it with young children and adults suffering from dementia) that people will create stories (memories) to explain what they can’t remember or otherwise explain. It’s self-comforting behavior. Do you think Ian Stevenson wasn’t aware of this? He created a lot of protocol...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

As far as the 'immaterial nature of mind' is concerned - one way to think about that, is that 'judgement' is not something that can be explained in terms of neuroscience and so on. It is a very elusive faculty. Actually this Sanskrit word is relevant (even though I suspect it is more frequently asso...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

I've noticed that book, and it's on my 'must-read' list. Also just re-read an earlier comment DNA seems to be a pretty good explanation of why we are who we are. There are many - very many - human attributes and characteristics which I don't think are attributable to causes that can be understood pu...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

Rebirth and karma have nothing to do with morality... Generally agree with your post, but I find that a pretty odd statement. Look at the first two verses of the Dharmapada. What we do, determines what we become. Selfless actions lead to happiness, as the wheel of the cart follows the ox. And so on...

Re: What is reborn after death?

My reading is that it is unwise to speculate about the nature of after-death states. On one level I’m agnostic about it, but agnosticism also means accepting that it’s something I don’t understand. I think when we try and visualise or imagine what such states must consist of we will invariably fail,...

Re: Is Anatta incompatible with rebirth?

Maybe I'm missing something, but there is nothing about the nature of my mind that I've observed that would necessitate rebirth is part of the equation. This observation actually seems to find confirmation in the assertion as to the non-arising of phenomena - whatever I think is me I've observed is...

Re: What is reborn after death?

One thing that ought to be spelled out is that Hindus didn’t use the term ‘soul’. That is word of Greek origin which has been used to translate the Hindu ātman. But the literal meaning of ātman is ‘I am’, and it has many different connotations to the Greek word ‘soul’ which developed in an entirely ...
