Yes, that would make sense, but that isn't what the original poster wrote.

Re: Mixing Worldly and Dharma Paths

I have personally spent most of my life practicing Buddha Dharma in a country without Buddhist. I worked full time. I raised two kids. I had a number of relationships, both with Buddhist and non-Buddhists women. I studied comparative religion at a University. I made a career in IT. None of this abov...

Re: Thrinley Nyingpo Practice from Chokling tersar

Hi, once I went to a certain retreat with Neten Chokling Rinpoche and as a surprise we received a bonus empowerment! It was the empowerment for Thrinley Nyingpo, I guess Rinpoche thought it would be auspicious. Well, so me and others didn't took the full course, we got the empowerment and the sadha...

Re: Dharmakaya / Primordial Buddha

Vajradhara actually appears here and there in the general Nyingma and Dzogchen teachings. He is considered a Samboghkaya emanation of Samanthabadra. /magnus In terma that appeared post the transmission of sarma to Tibet, sure, but there aren't any appearances in older sources are there? Not sure, b...

Re: Dharmakaya / Primordial Buddha

I brought this up on the Shingon section, and it is their opinion that Vairocana is the Primordial Buddha, although a teacher at my temple refuted this saying Vairocana is a sambogha-kaya rather than dharma-kaya. Is this true within tibetan tradition? Can someone explain to me the difference betwee...

Re: Mixing Worldly and Dharma Paths

I am curious about this concept of mixing dharma with non-Buddhist paths. It is certainly an observable phenomenon to see people mixing, even intentionally hybridizing, spiritual paths. Usually the intention is that it's all the same -- or perhaps the imperative that it should be made the same . At...

Re: Mixing Worldly and Dharma Paths

This requires full engagement with others. It is the antithesis of this attitude that Buddhists should disengage and interact only with their own. Why would Buddhists only interact with "with their own"? This is certainly not in the teachings of the Buddha. /magnus The basis for this instruction an...

Re: Mixing Worldly and Dharma Paths

Not all beings are capable (have the karma) to embrace the teachings of Buddhism, but if you can use their current beliefs to help them practice correct ethics (wholesome behaviour) and accumulate merit, then that is better than letting them slide into the lower realms where they will have no chanc...

Is there an empowerment for yeshe lama? Yes, it is in the book in the beginning of the Tögal section. However, there is nothing indicating that he will give that. If I understand correctly he will give the empowerments from the root volumes of the LN, not all empowerments from LN. https://www.rigpa...

Re: The argument of astrophysicists against astrology

Astrology being a part of the "ten sciences" in Tibet is actually something imported from India. My understanding is that astrology is a lay science like drama or medicine.

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

I will check out the book PSM. I've actually benefitted from this conversation for the record, and have also benefited from reading (some) books. Can we drop the "ask your teacher" thing? Give me the benefit of the doubt that I'm asking the question for good reasons, and that I make use of my own r...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

They are certainly in the way prior to self liberating, so unless someone is resting int he nature of mind 24/7..... I was thinking we are talking about during trekchod practice. If one thinks that thoughts get in the way of trekchod practice, then there isn't recognition. Whenever one thinks that ...

Re: Kagyu Ngondro/ Dzogchen transmission?

Hello! First post here. Just curious about Ngondro. I am preparing to begin Kagyu Ngondro. I am curious if once I compete that will I be able to receive Dzogchen transmissions or will I need to complete a separate Ngondro? Or will it depend on the teacher? Most teachers I will most likely be receiv...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

I am afraid you are jumping to conclusions Greg. In both Mahamudra and Dzogchen the meditation instruction is to don't follow or repress thoughts, however that don't mean that Buddhas have thoughts. Thoughts are a limited knowing and as such can never correspond with the wisdom of the Buddhas. In M...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

So here is the million dollar question: if thoughts and concepts are not also of the nature of mind, if they can only be born of delusion, then has EVERYTHING that has been said and quoted in this thread purely delusional? Hi Greg, Good question, and this is a conversation worth having, IMO. It's r...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

Could be a Mahamudra question too: Once a person begins to have some confidence in distinguishing mind from it's nature, is there any particular point in working with conventional thoughts and appearances in meditation anymore, rather than simply resting in the nature of mind? Is it now time to exa...

Re: question on distingushing mind from it's nature

Who is approachable to just talk to and ask for thögal instructions? I had no idea that was even possible. I would have thought you would need to have reasonably complete and very lineage-specific empowerments, lungs, guidance etc and in most cases have completed tantric ngondro and so on. No? Thog...
