Re: Tantric and late Indian Buddhist philosophy
I don't think many refer to Shingon or Tendai as Vajrayana except if they are using the term broadly to reference all sorts of esoteric Buddhism. Like your use of the adjective “Chinese” to describe Amoghavajra, who was not Chinese but did teach in China. Almost all literature on Shingon I have enc...

Re: Tantric and late Indian Buddhist philosophy
which would mean it's very unlikely indeed that Chinese masters such as Amoghavajra would describe their own practice as Vajrayana. And if so, it's hardly appropriate to describe Taimitsu as practiced in Shingon or Tendai as Vajrayana (it's sometimes explained as Vajrayana). thanks for the clarific...

English version of Tendai Shikyogi
I am having great difficulty finding a translation of the Tendai Shikyogi as it only appears in bits and pieces in the few English works on Tendai. Do the Tendai Institutes in Hawaii or New York have their own translations that are used for study? If so, is it possible to get a copy of this foundati...

Re: Questions regarding Practices
Ritual in Shingon is as in your face as zazen is in Zen for the outside observer. For those of us with limited or no exposure, it is difficult to get to the point of asking these questions until the curiosity regarding ritual has been sufficiently satisfied. You might as well expect a lay person to...

Questions regarding Practices
There was an interesting post in this forum regarding how Shingon practitioners would respond to a quote from the Nikayas. That thread was locked so I refer to it here and also broaden the discussion a bit. This is for Esoteric Buddhists, those of you who follow Vajrayana, be it Tibetan or Shingon o...

Re: Ninja Kuji-In Mudra from Vairocanasambodhi Sutra?
Yamabushi schools/masters usually are affiliated with either Tendai, Shingon, or Shinto etc. Though you'll commonly hear it simply broken up into "Buddhist" and "Shinto" schools. Also to the OP, if anything the Yamabushi most likely taught the Kuji-In to Ninjas rather than non-f...

Re: The Vimalakirtinirdesan Sutra
BDK came out with this a year or two ago, translated by Hubbard. Has anyone read the commentary and is the entire sutra text part of the translation also? Re: Shingon resources?
Having said that, what are some good books and websites that explain the exoteric beliefs and practices of the Shingon school? I am looking for text that is nonacademic and somewhat insider in nature. Dear Ylee111, Shingon Buddhism shares many of the same exoteric teachings as any other Mahayana sc...

A Buddhist Theory of Semiotics: -Have you read?
I'm curious if anyone has read "A Buddhist Theory of Semiotics: signs, ontology, and salvation in Japanese esoteric Buddhism"? It describes itself as "a unique introduction to the important aspects of Shingon buddhism." The author is a professor of Shinto which is why I am curiou...

Seishin, I am not aware of English versions but perhaps you may have some luck reviewing the references in Ms. Wong's paper: http://people.virginia.edu/~dcw7a/articles/Case_of_Amoghapasa.pdf Or perhaps the references of the OnMark publication: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/Iconography-of-Amoghap-...

Re: Lisence to Teach vs Maha Acarya?
The "Maha acarya" mentioned is fully called a Dento Dai-Ajari 傳燈大阿闍梨. Only a person with that rank can formally teach praxis in Koyasan. It is received by special admission and at least another ten years of study after Denbo Kanjo including formal debate, and after receiving the highest a...

Re: What a Zen Master is, and what a Zen Master isn't.
While this discussion is taking place in English, it may be worth pointing out that: The term 禪師 chanshi / zenshi is not derived from 老師 laoshi / roshi. And 師 shi neither means "master" nor "teacher". ~~ Huifeng Venerable, if you have time, would you please expound on this furth...

Re: 52 Stages of the Boddhisattva
I should add two points on this: 1) Astus' ideas on this are very much worth considering. Why? Because this claim.. He states that the 52 stages of Boddhisattvas is derived from the Saddharma Pundarika sutra. ...is not entirely accurate. Snellgrove attributes it to the Lotus Sutra and to the Niokyo...

Re: 52 Stages of the Boddhisattva
That's very interesting material indeed. Please understand also that I am by no means competent in esoteric practice. I thank you again. My question has no relation to esoteric Buddhism and is regarding solely exoteric teachings. To provide you with more context, Snodgrass's inclusion of this was i...

Re: 52 Stages of the Boddhisattva
Saddharma Pundarika Sutra, that is the Lotus Sutra. Quite a few translations are available online. Here is the BTTS version . The 52 stages system is based on the Gandavyuha Sutra, which is also the last chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra. Here are the stages in brief: Fifty-two Positions in the Proce...

52 Stages of the Boddhisattva
Hello Lotus School followers. I was wondering if any one might be able to help me to answer a question, In Snodgrass' The Matrix and Diamond World Mandalas in Shingon Buddhism http://www.vedicbooks.net/matrix-diamond-world-mandalas-shingon-buddhism-p-7352.html He states that the 52 stages of Boddhis...

Re: Tendai Sages
The Japanese text is the Chinese text, and the Chinese is a translation -- not a transliteration -- from Sanskrit, Xuanzang's version is the norm. Of course, the Japanese have a number of ways of pronouncing the Chinese text, though. ~~ Huifeng Venerable, this is true for the sutra itself but not f...
