Re: How do we deal with desires?

What do you want to do with them?

It might help for you to understand why raga (sometimes translated as "desires") are problematic in Buddhist teachings.

Re: The Mindfulness Conspiracy

Tune in, turn on, drop out. Actually, dropping out is one of the most revolutionary things you can do. I went on an annual Father's Day Weekend fishing trip with some usual suspects... one of them is what I'd call a Mandarin - works in politics in a high profile job trying to make civil society work...

Corporate rollout is planned for the 4th quarter, right now is the organic social media marketing stage. If they start selling authentic awakening, I wouldn't complain. Reminds me of the future anthropologist's analysis of a McDonalds... It went something like... The supplicant entered the temple a...

Of course awakening in the first quarter of the 21st century will happen in a Starbucks ... They should start building stupas inside and change their logo to an eight spoked wheel. And include a shrine to me, Queequeg, the Noble Savage. https://www.reddit.com/r/streamentry/comments/c1wg16/practiceco...

Re: What appeals to you about the Lotus Sutra?

First of all, I am very sympathetic with your reaction to the sutra, and wonder that many may share the same feeling. When I first read the sutra, I was on the one hand attracted to it in a way I could not fathom or describe, but on the other hand quite perplexed: besides the praises of the merits ...

Comment: Only after Hiroshima and Nagasaki did Toda become a pacifist. Since when is it a bad thing to change your mind? Being able to change your mind is the mark of inner development. Only an idiot continues down a path out of pride that they know is detrimental . I think that's the whole point o...

This also points to the great antiquity of the Lotus Sutra, that the Lotus sutra, atleast its main themes, existed before the Aryan peoples came to India.
How do you figure? Curious to hear this argument laid out.

Re: Word buddha: a direct meaning or a metaphor?

What is this first sutra you refer to?

Buddha means Awakened One.

When he woke up, it is reported that he said, "It is liberated. Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived out, what was to be done is done, there is no more of this to come."

The question is, what did Buddha wake up to?

Re: human revolution 1973 - movie

To be fair, its too bad they don't have that movie with English subs. You have to understand how intense that crucible that created the Josei Toda who is famous was. He went to prison because he refused to enshrine the emperor's tablet on his Butsudan. His master, Makiguchi, died while locked up. He...

Re: human revolution 1973 - movie

I don't know how long people have been practicing, so not sure what sort of frame of reference I'm addressing. In short, I would repeat this: Get a hold of the Human Revolution books. It was written by Ikeda, but Toda guided that. It was written back when Ikeda was still primarily Toda's disciple an...

If you know SGI now, go back and read Human Revolution.

SG is runs from their history. They're sanitizing memory.

No one practices like Toda anymore. They don't want that.

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

According to Nichiren there is only one precept, NMRK. Following the 5 precepts is a supplementary practice, strictly speaking, and it can be encouraged. Because its really basically good advice on living an ethical life, and basically derives from the one precept.
