Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

the quality of emptiness is the lack of object-ness. Am I missing something? Not lack of ‘object-ness’ - absence of own-being, svabhava. Nothing is ‘self-originated’ i.e. existing from its own side. But if I throw a rock through your window, it will still break, and that will definitely mean someth...

Re: How do we deal with a loved one who is selfish, narcissistic and insensitive to our feelings?

I appreciate that. You've given me much to chew on. But what if reaching out to this person is harmful to us? I don't know for sure. It's something you need to figure out. You may need to consult a mental health professional to help sort your feelings. Taking your comment on face value, , limiting ...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

Emptiness is meaningful, at least it is to me. I don't see what there is to reconcile. Please explain that. How do you find emptiness meaningful? The concept obviously has meaning. I can imagine Sisyphus not feeling a lack of meaning if he realized it, to express it by way of contextual example. No...

Re: The Unbearable Lightness of Anatman

Been in and out of this thread so pardon if I've missed something. Isn't samsara due to the fact that we mistakenly project subjective significance on to something that is empty of any significance? The more elaborate senses of meaning derive from the more elaborate notions of self and their complem...

Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai is working on a complete translation of the Taisho. Far from complete, but some of what they have published so far is available here:

Presently re-reading the intro to Swanson's translation by Donner and Stevenson. Relevant to the present discussion of Guanding's introduction and recitation of lineage, Donner & Stevenson discuss how the Western tradition (Indian lineage) represents the doctrinal tradition while the Chinese sages r...

Re: Are Pure Land and Nichiren Buddhisms Compatible With Each Other?

The Sudden and Perfect teachings in Tiantai are to bring about the attainment of the 1st abiding of the Perfect teaching in one life which is equivalent to 1st Bhumi or Buddhahood in the Separated and Shared teachings respectively. Discussing the intent of daimoku is probably more appropriate for t...

I think we keep this thread open as long as these shootings continue.

This is a shameful thread.

Re: Happy Birthday Nichiren! How do we celebrate?

Thank you for the reminder!

Remember, reflect, express gratitude, resolve to continue... practice for oneself and for others... Visit Tanjou-ji, if you can.

Not sure if this is a significant celebration. Births are not so important in Japan.

Hard to parse the ramblings of a mad man, but sounds kinda like Chump thought the kids who got shot should have done more. From his Twitter... So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a...

Re: Allow myself to introduce myself.

Whoa. Thanks for that. I can relate to an extent. As a fellow wheeler put it, "been there, got the T-shirt." Dharmas are all cages, to an extent, holding us in patterns of thoughts words deeds until the wellspring of the teaching becomes our thoughts words deeds. Many dharmas, explicitly religious, ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

The AU plan won't work. Aside from lack of political will, there is the 2nd amendment that, in the least, will tie any such efforts in litigation. To overcome the 2nd amendment, a law would need to pass a standard called "Strict Scrutiny" which requires laws infringing on civil rights to be narrowly...

Buddha also had Devadatta as a student. Can't blame everything on the teacher.
That's an irksome comparison. Something gets very distorted to make that work. Trungpa = Shakyamuni? Recklessly spreading the HIV = schism?

I don't think you really want to stand by that comparison.

Re: Re : Guidance on karma and domestic abuse

I decided to give this issue its own thread : When I was a new member, the guy I took as my mentor once observed that a lot of the guidance he got from his mentor seemed more like Japanese cultural tradition talking than Buddhism. I was so young in faith that I had never considered this, but my men...

I've noticed lately that I get riled up on this forum more than anywhere, from just talking about things. I believe that is because I care about the subject matter on a deep level. Purely speculation but I think my exploration into *meaning* may have tempered my disposition more than anything else....

Several close friends from childhood/teen years got caught up with heroin. Heroin killed a few of them. The one's who survived their 20s, I'm happy to report, got clean and are now back to the world of the living. They have careers, families, all that stuff. Seeing them get clean was a relief and it...

Have you contacted local 12 step programs or counselors? There are many people experienced with this.

Sometimes only a recovering addict who has gotten clean can relate.

Get some professional assistance.

Re: How do we deal with a loved one who is selfish, narcissistic and insensitive to our feelings?

One of the core teachings of ichinen sanzen is our deep connection to the beings and environment around us. When we change at the deepest aspect of our lives, our mind (ichinen), we are transformed at the grosser levels of our mind and body. This part is probably easy to believe - when we are happy ...
