Re: Dead Root Guru?

What can one do when their root guru is dead? Also, what does one MUST do before root guru's death? Study and practice with your guru as much as possible before they die. If at all possible serve them directly (cook and clean for them, develop a direct personal relationship if possible without bein...

Re: Preparing for Ordination in Shingon

None of my friends have come across Shingon. Shingon, meaning "True Word" or mantra, is a form of Japanese Vajrayana that was brought from China to Japan by Kobo Daishi Kukai around 800 AD. Vajrayana is briefly a teaching to attain Buddhahood very quickly rather than requiring eons of time. It has ...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

http://melong.com/open-letter-from-chogyal-namkhai-norbu/ It is a very interesting book. Also, I recently read "The Life and Times of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö" where one gets to hear "the other side" of the story of how come Khyentse Chökyi Wangchug left Dzongsar and Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö move...

Re: Unkindness at dharmawheel

Is there any? If so, why? Unfortunately there is unkindness on DW. A lot over time actually. Some of it is simple misunderstanding. Therefore that is not unkindness per se. But people can misunderstand each other for a long time and go back and forth about it and say unkind things (IOW the original...

Re: Preparing for Ordination in Shingon

Start by moving to Hawai'i or Mt. Koya and receive direct teaching. There are also temples in other places though so perhaps the best thing is to move close to one of them and begin practicing there. Shingon practice is otherwise pretty closed off. http://www.shingonbuddhism.org/links/shingon-temple...

Re: Chan practioner thinking about visiting a nyingma center

... what kind of practice they do or what a nyingma teacher might recommend as far as practice. What might i expect? In general you will probably find their meditation to be very "light" in intensity or even brief in comparisson to most Zen centers. However you could also find that the approach to ...

Re: Shakyamuni and bodhisattva vow

my point is: there is no need for a vow if you truly want to live on boddhicitta, you just do it no need for words. i hope not being rude on this :( That is the general Zen approach but in fact Zen practitioners take formal Boddhisattva vows. But both before and after formally taking the Bodhisattv...

I have just found an interesting-looking title on Amazon - Zen & Karma: Teachings of Roshi Taisen Deshimaru . I got the Kindle preview, and am tossing up whether to buy. Any of the members here familiar with this book? The Kindle preview stops just before they begin with the actual transcription of...

HHDL has a different priority than that, however.... When he talks about Christianity he talks about Thomas Merton (who evidently had some qualities), not the Pope.
