Re: SCOTUS Decision

Did you really just ask this? How dare they. Lol. Smh... More fundamentally, part of our practice as Buddhists is to listen carefully to the sufferings of others--those close to us and near to us. This is how compassion works: taking the sufferings of others seriously, and recognizing it as a probl...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Then don't take it seriously. You have highly educated people who have devoted their lives to formulating and delineating arguments against the kind of claims I'm pointing to here. Listen to them. You aren't pointing to any claims though, nearly everything you've posted in this thread, with a coupl...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

So, long story short, Buddhism does seem to address homosexuality indirectly. Indirectly, because it was a given at the time that homosexual acts were shameful behavior. My argument, which I'm not really trying to make at this point, is more centered on implications rather than specific prohibition...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

You are actually doing exactly what they are doing, claiming that the practice of Dharma requires one to take a certain political or social position that is concretely unalterable. Your evidence for that seems to be what "well Buddhist societies treated homosexuality in X way", but this is not beca...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Other than small, disparate groups, the far-right in this country lacks any kind of grassroots movement to push back. Sure that may change, but as of right now I believe it is true. The larger right-wing movements, Tea Party etc. are all spearheaded by Billionaires and huge organizations who know t...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

in the absence if a better argument, I know where I stand. Well I'm more doubtful of where I stand, and I don't see why I should even have an opinion on something like this. You have an awful lot of posts one the subject for someone who does not see why they should have an opinion on the subject Th...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Given our rigorous standards of evidence here, I'm afraid that we will have to accept that the validity of your assertion is inconclusive on both counts... By rigorous you mean insisting on at least one supporting reference from source material for one's outlandish claims? If you'll summarize and l...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Conservative Christians are sentient beings with buddha-nature just as much as gay people are. Given our rigorous standards of evidence here, I'm afraid that we will have to accept that the validity of your assertion is inconclusive on both counts... I am neutral on the issue of gay marriage, but I...

but nevertheless I've never seen homosexuality endorsed, encouraged or portrayed positively in any classical Buddhist literature... Nor have you seen heterosexuality endorsed, encouraged or portrayed positively in any classical Buddhist literature. Classical Buddhist literature [i.e. pre-7th centur...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

I rather throw out the notion of rights and work on the level of what is wholesome and unwholesome, (kusala, akusla) beneficial and detrimental, level as regards policy in pertainable jurisdiction - criminal law, provincial, national, foreign policy, etc. In that regard, I'm not suggesting anything...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

As a gay woman the small anti argument really has nothing to do with gay rights, it's more a cri de coeur for the Men's Right's movement, which is why they look to an idealized past when men were in charge, men got respect, there were kings, etc. To support my point I dont think there are any women...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

And even if that doesn't occur, it doesn't mean that the implications of the technologies we have been developing for a while won't lead to very, very old human objectives finally being completed. What happens when foot-binding becomes engineered and congenital? When social norms are no longer need...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Yes, by our Anunaki reptilian overlords. Reptilian overlords. An apt metaphor, yes. Maybe reptilian hindbrains. Also, it seems that the process isn't obvious to some people how the human animal is corralled and cultivated into civilization until you come across, well, savagery. Ignorance, poverty, ...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

You mention hook-up culture, which exists for straights too, and we both would agree there is huge erosion of the nuclear family. I would propose at the center of this is a general erosion of a sense of responsibility for an increased sense of personal liberty and freedom, and a pervasive trivializ...

Re: SCOTUS Decision

Many animals eat their young. And enough with the ad hominems, although it is instructive that you're not able to discuss the issue without engaging in them. It is typical of this debate. Over and out. Dangerous realtalk. Let the "crazies" fight this battle. They can't find you as well in prolesect...

I'm not an identity politics peep. That said... Trying to make it so that a woman isn't raped or beaten every few minutes != the new Weimar republic. Re: SCOTUS Decision

No, laws have. Most of those are a growing body of adjustments that allow diverse groups to live together in smaller spaces. This practice has been in existence since the agricultural revolution, when the practice of settling groups together began. That causes them often to get mistaken for values,...
