Re: Democrats are compulsive self mutilators

Bernie is a terrific person but clearly too far to the left to be a realistic prospect. You know this world is done for when health care, infrastructure and education are considered left wing... It also shows a very profound ignorance of basic economics. When you weed out the noise from credit cycl...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

I think we're talking about different things, but I'll roll. The flow of Dana is an indication that the lay community enthusiastically supports dharma. Corruption is a separate issue. I don't disagree with what you're saying about the importance of teachers, but, its frankly odd to put emphasis on ...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

Following up. In my village, a wealthy Indian man opened a Hindu temple in a building he owns. I looked into buying that building with a vague idea of opening a Dharma hall in that same place. This is how wealthy religious Asians think about supporting Dharma. I see this all over Asia. My experienc...

Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

Are there things like retreat cottages near Chiang Mai? By moving overseas I can afford a little cabin for retreat up in the hills. Would that work there?

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

We need a strong subculture of Western Buddhist nomads. You're talking about tumbleweed yogis. They depend on the settled communities for their support. They've always been a counter-culture. You need the community householders to support that. Horse before the cart. #vanlife #yogini https://youtu....

D or R doesn't matter. Stop being a sucker and falling for this good cop, bad cop routine. The tick tock of parties is public theater. The elites always get what they want.

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

This all gets very complicated and needs a finer lens. I am Tibetan Buddhist and that form is drying up among Caucasians. Asian Buddhism is doing OK in NA and among Hispanics it's exploding. The same explosion it saw in Caucasian communities 35 years ago. Those were very exciting times, but it was a...

Wow, what an interesting and informative talk. I'm glad I voiced my misgivings about our uncertain future.

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

You think being at mass events will teach you what you need to know? Do they live here? Did they even learn proper English? I can see this is getting people very defensive. That is good. This glide path is very obvious and should be talked about.

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

Like it or not Dharma in the West is failing. You may attempt to stay in a bubble but many high Lamas no longer bother with North America. Fixing problems means facing them. All religions in NA have been steadily graying for decades. People aren't that interested and I see no reason to stuff it down...

This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

[Mod note: split from Latest report on Shambala abuse just released .] This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful. The reincarnation of masses of Tibetans in the West after the destruction of Tibet were ideal circumstances. They are old and Dharma was already dwindling before all these sc...

Re: Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

Chiang Mai seems to be the favourite choice. I'll try and get there soon to check it out. I thought Taiwan/Taipei might get some love. Bangkok might be a great travel hub for a year or two before settling down. Can foreigners buy condos in Chiang Mai like you can in Bangkok? Maybe it is better to re...

Best winter home for retired Buddhists?

I'm retired(only 47) now with disposable income. I hate winter and live pretty far North by global standards. I want to hide out 3 months every year eventually. Chiang Mai and Bangkok look the cheapest. If Bangkok then flights to Tibet, Nepal, Taiwan etc are incredibly cheap and convenient. 2 weeks ...

Re: Politics and Toxicity

I don't think I understood politics until I worked in it. The system is not broken. It is working quite well for those it serves. The key is that most humans are not rational animals. The game now is to understand the psychology of groups and give them a story that resonates with them. Much of this...

Re: Dealing With Demons

Pacifying, enriching, magnetizing and finally destroying and generally in that order.
To view sentient beings as pure evil is very Christian. Kindness and giving can break many demons. Some thrive on destruction.

Re: Latest report on Shambala abuse just released.

Dominance based hierarchies have innate problems. Shambala loves and idolizes them. Shakyamuni never did. They made this problem and confronting dominance and hierarchy is the only meaningful way out. Maybe this is what they are meant to do? Dismantling this demon based on materialist philosophies c...

Re: Praetorian Guard starting to move?

Trump is in no danger. When I was in the army I watched the number of contractors exceed 50% of troops in Afghanistan. About 65% of intel work is private now. Mercenary armies run the show. They pay 3 to 6 times what the army does and no Code of Service Discipline. https://theintercept.com/2017/12/0...

Their guiding creed is Islam, and a particular type . We don't know that it's the political system that is screwing things up. Ya, and our plutocracy is so amazing with our thousands of nukes, fake democracy and imminent ecological catastrophe. Why would we ever want to imagine improving our perfec...
