Re: Socialism & Communism

I don't think Adam Smith is being characterized fairly. He thought landlords would not have the heart to exploit peasants excessively. He considered his magnum opus to be The Theory of Moral Sentiments not the Wealth of Nations. His capitalism was subservient to a moral framework. I think a return t...

Re: Kill Daesh Jihadists from Britain says Government

In this country, 13 year olds can be tried as adults if the crime is sufficiently grave. Nope, illegal under the Geneva Convention to charge child soldiers. When I was still involved with the army the thing in Syria was meant to be a honey pot so we could get all our radicals out of the country so ...

Re: Would advanced AI possess Buddha-nature?

I remember a conversation between a Tulku and Terton decades ago. One mentioned Namkhai Norbu talking about all the world systems where Dzogchen was taught. The terton stated teaching AI or computer based intelligence was problematic because they found it near impossible to see the nature of mind.

Re: Morality of stockholding

Isn't it a form of parasitism? Defending the morality of making money while you sleep while others toil and sweat for a fraction of what you make takes some very intense mental gymnastics.

Advice for scraping a website.

An academic website I am fond of may go offline. I would hate for some of the things on it to be lost. I would like to scrape the content to store it offline. Perhaps even print a copy. I have the authors permission. Can anyone point me in tbe right direction?

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Weird but didn't Jetsumna do all these things. Banging students half her age, excessive luxuries, smoking weed all the time, casting black magic rituals on her ex-husband, hiding child molesters in her Sangha,.....Maybe she is all better now.

Re: Scandals in the Buddhist world - what do they really mean?

If your teacher has shown you the nature of mind hope they are not a crazy wisdom yogi. You may be breaking them out of jail or scoring them drugs. It really wouldn't matter as you only need to keep your samayas and if the blessings are real you would know. Hopefully they live a conventional life.

Re: mindfulness, meditation and martial arts and war

You can be a good fighter or a good Buddhist. You can't do both. Eventually you have to choose one. Many martial arts are gloirified acrobatics. Contrarily a life of violence is not a right livelihood. Catching bad guys gets old and generally more dangerous as you age. Why waste your time on this wh...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas practice Ngöndro?

Codifying prostrations, Guru yoga, Vajrasattva and mandala offerings into a credential seems a bit odd. Do we really need more credentials? Most practitioners do all those things in some form everyday anyway. Wasn't it mostly a Gelug practice at first?

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Greg, it's really stupid behavior to post a spoiler from an episode that hasn't officially aired yet on HBO. The episode in question was a leak. So, the vast majority of people who follow this show has not yet watched it (it airs on Sunday evenings in the US, so Monday for Europeans). Please consid...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Either Sogyal is a crazy wisdom yogi or a criminal, though both is also an acceptable answer. It wasn't just orgies, or living like an eccentric millionaire on money given to the Buddha Dharma, or fleecing the naive out of cash, or randomly beating nuns in public. It was creating a harem, making the...

A.pair of very nice rebuttals of DJKR's statement. I thought his staement was lame and avoided being honest and direct. It badly needed edititng. https://buddhism-controversy-blog.com/2017/08/18/on-dzongsar-khyentse-rinpoches-statement-from-a-reader-of-the-new-york-times/ http://www.patheos.com/blog...

Thanks i'll look at it tonight/ over the weekend. Though if it's just more preaching, shoving his peculiar, partly medieval world view down our throats, I shan't be impressed. Entirely up to you. You said you were searching for information. If you start a new thread we can discuss "the pecu...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Businessmen always have an angle and court money, sex and power. Just having these things should make a teacher suspect. Yes, a Vajrayana Guru who has sex and power is just a horrible idea. It clearly shows he has no ordinary siddhis  It is not the siddhi. It is the attachment to the sex and ...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

I think some of the folks here need to hang with some arrogant young Tulkus and then watch them fail at life over 20+ years. They are only as good as their training. If their heads are filled with pseudo-aristocratic misogyny and self importance creepy old men forcing girls one third their age into ...

Are they a free agent or in bondage to a pimp? Paying for sex is not ideal but I have seen worse relationships. Using a sex slave is something quite different.
